Gun barrel assembly containing several projectiles disposed in tandem sequence

Abstract

A barrel (12) assembly (10)(10) includes barrel (12)(12), projectile assemblies (14) axially disposed within the barrel (12), propellant charge (16)s (16)(16), ignition means (18), and control means (20). Projectile assemblies (14) are sequentially fired from the barrel (12). Also disclosed is an arming system, a barrel (12) construction, means for preventing compression of the propellant charge (16)s (16) and means (34,36) for ensuring sealing between the projectile assembly (14) and the barrel (12). <IMAGE>

22 claims: 4 independent, 18 dependent

  1. 1
In a barrel assembly (10) of the type having a column of projectiles (14) arranged in line within the barrel (12) with associated selectively ignitable propellant charges (16) for propelling the projectiles (14) sequentially through the muzzle of the barrel (12), a method of forming a seal between the projectiles (14) and the barrel (12) so as to prevent an ignited leading propellant charge (16) travelling rearward past the following projectile (14) so as to ignite the propellant charge (16) associated with that following projectile (14), the method including:providing each projectile (14) with a radially expandable sealing part having a forwardly-reducing part-conical Inner surface;providing a complementary mandrel capable of interacting with the part-. conical inner surface so as to expand the sealing part into operative sealing engagement with the bore of the barrel (12);supporting each complementary mandrel from the column of trailing projectiles (14), andarranging the sealing part for movement in a rearward direction over its complementary mandrel and into sealing engagement with the bore of the barrel (12).
  2. 4
A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein movement of the sealing part occurs as a consequence of ignition of the preceding propellant charge (16).
  3. 5
A barrel assembly (10) of the type having a barrel (12) with a plurality of projectile assemblies disposed in end to end abutting relationship therein forming a compression resistant column in which each projectile assembly has a projectile head and a spacer assembly (28) extending axially therefrom to abut the adjacent projectile assembly, characterised in that:complementary wedging surfaces (34,36) are disposed on the spacer assembly (28) and projectile head (26) whereby relative axial engagement therebetween will cause a radial expansion of said projectile head (26) into sealing engagement with said barrel (12);a discrete propellant charge (16) is associated with each projectile assembly (14) for propelling the projectile assemblies (14) sequentially through the muzzle of said barrel (12);respective ignition means (18) are disposed externally of the barrel (12);ignition apertures (46) extend through the barrel (12) at positions between adjacent projectile heads (26) and providing communication between the externally disposed ignition means and the respective discrete propellant charges (16), and control means are provided for selectively and sequentially actuating said ignition means.
  4. 22
A barrel assembly (10) including:- a barrel (12);a plurality of projectile assemblies axially disposed in end to end abutting relationship within said barrel (12) in sealing engagement with the bore of said barrel (12), said plurality of projectiles (14) being disposed in axially abutting relationship to form a compression resistant column, each projectile assembly (14) including a projectile head (26) and extension means for at least partly defining a propellant space, said extension means including a spacer assembly which extends axially from said projectile head (26) and abuts an adjacent projectile assembly (14);complementary wedging surfaces disposed on said spacer assembly and projectile head (26) respectively, said projectile head (26) defining a tapered aperture (38) at its rearward end into which is received a complementary tapered spigot (40) disposed on the leading end of said spacer assembly such that relative axial movement between the tapered aperture (38) and the complementary tapered spigot (40) causes a radially expanding force to be applied to the projectile head (26);said projectile head (26) and spacer assembly being loaded into said barrel (12), and thereafter an axially compressive load being applied to ensure sealing between said projectile head (26) and the barrel (12),discrete propellant charges (16) for propelling respective projectile assemblies sequentially through the muzzle of said barrel (12);ignition means disposed externally of the barrel (12) for igniting said discrete propellant charges (16);ignition apertures through the barrel (12) at positions between adjacent projectile head (26)s and providing communication between the externally disposed ignition means and the respective discrete propellant charges (16), and control means for selectively and sequentially actuating said ignition means.
