Methods and apparatus for processing a document

An autocomplete method speeds up and simplifies the production of documents using a computer system. After the user has input at least a predefined length input character string, the autocomplete method automatically provides a user with a display of one or more character strings that include the predefined length character string. The user can select one of the displayed character strings either to substitute for the predefined length character string, or to supplement the input character string. The autocomplete method automatically selects the one or more character strings that are displayed from a current document, from one or more other documents that the user specified in a document reservoir, or from both current document and one or more other documents in the document reservoir. There is no requirement for relating the displayed character strings with specific key combinations, with a particular field in a form, or with a particular piece of computer code.
