Titanium/tin oxide films

Abstract

The invention is a substrate having a surface coated with a singular metal oxide film wherein the metal consists essentially of titanium and tin and the film is made from a liquid mixture of a titanate, a tin compound, and an anhydrous organic liquid. The substrate may be glass and the film applied by pyrolytic decomposition of the liquid mixture in air. Preferably, the film has a refractive index of greater than 2.2 and no visible light absorption to give it an optimal neutral appearance.

10 claims: 6 independent, 4 dependent

  1. 1
A substrate carrying an oxide film of titanium and tin, wherein said oxide film is made from a liquid mixture of an alkyl titanate, a tin compound, and an anhydrous organic liquid.
  2. 5
A substrate according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein said tin compound is dibutyltin-diacetate.
  3. 6
A substrate according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein said liquid mixture comprises, by volume, 40-47.5 % titanate selected from the group consisting of tetra-butyl titanate, tetra isopropyl titanate, and their mixture;5-20% dibutyltin diacetate;and 40-47.5 % anhydrous organic liquid selected from the group consisting of kerosene, isopropyl alcohol, and their mixture.
  4. 8
A substrate according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein said film has a refractive index of greater than 2.2.
  5. 9
A substrate according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein said film is 20 to 80 nm thick.
  6. 10
A pyrolytic decomposition method for providing a singular metal oxide film, wherein the metal consists essentially of titanium and tin, on a surface of a hot substrate which comprises spraying the surface at a temperature of at least 538°C (1000°F) with a solution of a thermally decomposable titanate compound and tin compound mixed in an anhydrous organic solvent.
