10 claims: 3 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
A network flow switch (205) for routing packets to and from a plurality (200) of IP servers (210-250), wherein each of the IP servers has a same IP address (290) and a Data Link Layer address that differs from the Data Link Layer address of the other IP servers, the network flows switch comprising:a processor (402);a memory (404) connected to the processor;and a plurality of network ports (415-418) connected to a network;CHARACTERISED IN THAT the network flow switch is adapted to route (445) a packet (300) received (420) on a first network port to a second network port by writing (440) a Data Link Layer address of one of the IP servers into the packet.
  2. 4
A method for routing packets to and from a plurality (200) of IP servers (210-250), wherein each of the IP servers has a same IP address (290) and a Data Link Layer address that differs from the Data Link Layer address of the other IP servers, the method comprising:receiving a packet (300) for the IP address of the IP servers, and routing the packet to at least one of the IP servers, CHARACTERISED IN THAT receiving comprises receiving (420) the packet in a network flow switch (205) corresponding to the IP address of the IP servers;and routing comprises routing (445) the packet to the at least one of the IP servers by writing (440) the destination Data Link Layer address of the IP server into the packet in the network flow switch.
  3. 10
A computer-readable medium (404) containing instructions which, when executed in a computer (205), cause the computer to perform all the method steps of one of claims 4-9.
