Method of providing transfer capability on Web-based interactive voice response services

Abstract

Interactive voice response (IVR) services are provided to an end user at a telephone terminal (201) connected to the PSTN (202) through a telephone/IP server (205) that serves as an interface between the PSTN and an IP network (204) such as the Internet. A first IVR service is provided by a web server (203) running a service logic (207) for that service, which produces pages formatted in a phone markup language (PML) in response to an HTTP request sent over the IP network by the telephone/IP server to the web server at the URL address associated with the service. These pages represent an interactive dialog for that first service, which when received by the telephone/IP server, are translated and converted to audio by an interpreter (206) for audio presentation to the end user. The end user's responses, either verbal or touch-tone, to questions posed during the dialog are collected by the telephone/IP server, translated, and forwarded to the web server. Hyperlinks to a second IVR service offered on a web server (208) at a different URL address are embedded and associated with a specific question or statement in a PML-formatted page produced by the first service. When the end user affirmatively responds to that statement or question through a verbal or touch-tone input, the telephone/IP server translates that response as a "click" on the hyperlink and establishes a virtual connection to the hyperlinked URL address of the web server providing the second service. Further, information associated with the end user's interaction with the first service, such as his identity, PIN, and/or zip code, is transferred to the second service by means of a cookie, URL encoding or other information transference mechanism, to provide an audio experience that seamlessly transfers the end user from the first service to the second.

  1. 1
In a system that provides interactive voice response (IVR) services to an end user at an audio terminal connected on a telephone network on a telephone call that is terminated at a telephone/IP server interconnected between the telephone network and an IP computer network, a first IVR service being provided by a web server connected on the IP computer network by means of a dialog on at least one page that is formatted using a phone markup language (PML), which dialog is interpreted by the telephone/IP server and translated and forwarded to the audio terminal of the end user whose responses are translated by the telephone/IP server and forwarded to the web server, a method comprising the steps of:receiving during the first IVR service a page of the dialog containing a statement that is associated with a hyperlink directed to a web server providing a second IVR service;translating the page of the dialog to an audio format and sending it over the telephone call to the audio terminal;receiving a response to the statement from the audio terminal representing a request by the end user for the second IVR service;making a request over the IP computer network to the web server providing the second IVR service;and forwarding together with the request information associated with the end user's dialog in the first IVR service, wherein the second IVR service is provided to the end user on the same telephone call terminated at the telephone/IP server over which the first IVR service is provided.
  2. 10
A method comprising the steps of:receiving on an IP computer network from a web server providing a first interactive voice response (IVR) service a page of a dialog formatted in a phone markup language (PML) of the first IVR service, the page including a hyperlink directed to a web server providing a second IVR service;translating the page to an audio format and sending it to an audio terminal of an end user over a telephone call established by the end user;receiving over the telephone call from the audio terminal an audio response representing a "click" by the end user on the hyperlink;making a request over the IP computer network to the web server providing the second IVR service;and forwarding together with the request information associated with the end user and the first IVR service, wherein the second IVR service is provided to the end user on the same telephone call on which the first IVR service is provided.
