Method of controlling the starting, stopping and speed of an AC induction motor

Abstract

A method for controlling the starting, stopping and operation of an AC motor (16) is provided. Each winding of the AC motor (16) is interconnected to an AC source (18) by a thyristor switch (42, 44, 46) and a bypass contactor (50, 52, 54) for providing voltage and current to the AC motor (16). The method includes the steps of sequentially firing a pair of tyristor switches (42, 44, 46) to bring the AC motor (16) to full operating speed. Once at operating speed, the bypass contactors (50, 52, 54) are closed. Upon detection of a voltage drop across a thyristor switch (42, 44, 46), the thyristor switch (42, 44, 46) is fired immediately to transfer motor current from the bypass contactor (50, 52, 54) to the thyristor switch (42, 44, 46) in order to maintain voltage and current to the AC motor (16).

  1. 1
A method for controlling a three phase, AC induction motor (16), each phase of the induction motor interconnected to an AC input source (18) by a thyristor switch (42, 44, 46) and a bypass contactor (50, 52, 54) connected in parallel for providing voltage and current to the AC induction motor (16), the method comprising the steps of:sequentially firing pairs of thyristor switches (42, 44, 46) to bring the AC induction motor (16) toward full operating speed, each thyristor switch (42, 44, 46) opening in response to zero current supplied by the AC input source (18);monitoring the operating speed of the AC induction motor (16);closing the bypass contactors (50, 52, 54) in response to the AC induction motor (16) operating at a predetermined operating speed;and firing a thyristor switch (42, 44, 46) in response to a voltage drop thereacross.
  2. 11
A method for controlling an AC motor (16) interconnected to an AC input source (18) by a thyristor switch (42, 44 or 46) and a bypass contactor (50, 52, or 54) connected in parallel for providing voltage and current to the AC motor (16), the bypass contactor (50, 52 or 54) being closed when the AC motor (16) is at full operating speed, the method comprising the steps of:operating the AC motor (16) at full operating speed;and firing the thyristor switch (42, 44 or 46) in response to a voltage drop thereacross.
