An holding apparatus (12) for facilitating the surgical implantation of a heart valve prosthesis having, i) a generally tubular prosthesis body (56) having an inner surface, an outer surface, a proximal end, a distal end, an inflow annulus at the proximal end thereof, an outflow annulus at the distal end thereof, and ii) a plurality of valving members (62) disposed within the prosthesis body to perform a hemodynamic valving function and a sewing ring attached to the inflow annulus to facilitate suturing of the inflow annulus to an endogenous opening, said holding apparatus comprising:a hub member (14) positionable adjacent the distal end of the prosthesis body at least one releasable attachment member connecting the proximal end of the prosthesis (54) to the proximal ends of a plurality of circumferentially distributed elongate strut members and holding the prosthesis     characterised in that strut members have distal ends which are attached to the distal hub member such that the strut members extend proximally therefrom to terminate in proximal ends adjacent the proximal end of the prosthesis and defining a hollow prosthesis retention space (52) within the strut members and proximal to the hub member, in which space the prothesis can be held the strut members being distributed such that a force applied in the proximal direction to the distal hub member of the holding apparatus will be transferred through the strut members to the releasable attachment member (78, 138, 152), thereby resulting in the application of a proximally directed pulling force distributed about the inflow annulus of the prosthesis.
