12 claims: 7 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A method for transferring data in a data flow between a mobile station (15) and a network by creating an uplink temporary block flow connection on a General Packet Radio Service of a telecommunication system between two radio resource entities, said uplink temporary block flow connection comprising a packet data channel, the data flow including at least one active data transfer period during which data blocks are transmitted by the mobile station;and transferring information from the mobile station to the network to indicate after an active data transfer period when the mobile station has no data blocks to send to the network, a passive period starts during which the uplink temporary block flow connection is preserved;characterised in that during the passive period the mobile station is periodically assigned transmission permissions for the packet data channel;wherein when the mobile station has no data blocks to send during the passive period, the mobile station transmits a packet dummy control block or signalling message.
  2. 3
A method according to any of claims 1 to 2, wherein the same packet data channel is allocated for more than one connection of delay sensitive data, all such connections having a passive period, such that when a first connection changes to an active transfer period, a second connection is reallocated to another packet data channel.
  3. 6
A method according to any one of the previous claims, characterised in that when a passive data transfer period follows an active data transfer period, the network allocates a number of transmit permissions that can be allocated to other mobile stations using temporary block flow connections (15) on the packet data channel.
  4. 7
A method according to any one of the previous claims, characterised in that when allocating data transfer resources for uplink packet data transfer, resources are also allocated for packet data transfer of a downlink data transfer direction.
  5. 9
A method according to any one of the previous claims, characterised in that when releasing the uplink temporary block flow connection, a downlink temporary block flow connection is maintained at least for a predetermined time.
  6. 10
A method according to any one of claims 1 to 8, characterised in that the release of a downlink temporary block flow connection is initialised with a message between the mobile station and the network.
  7. 11
A method according to any of the previous claims, characterised in that the network is informed on whether the packet data to be transferred is delay sensitive.
  8. 12
A mobile station (15) for transferring data in a data flow between the mobile station (15) and a network by creating an uplink temporary block flow connection on a General Packet Radio Service to a cellular telecommunications system, between two radio resource entities said uplink temporary block flow connection comprising a packet data channel, wherein the data flow comprises at least one active data transfer period during which data blocks are transmitted, the mobile station comprising means for transferring information on, after an active data transfer period when the mobile station has no data blocks to send to the network, a passive period starting during which the uplink temporary block flow connection is preserved:characterised in that during the passive period the mobile station is periodically assigned transmission permissions for the packet data channel;wherein when the mobile station has no data blocks to send during the passive period, the mobile station transmits a packet dummy control block or signalling message.
