Gas sensor

Abstract

A gas sensor is provided which can efficiently flow air into a casing while having a sufficient on-axis sectional area in a ceramic separator for allowing lead wires to pass therethrough. The oxygen sensor has a ceramic separator main body portion 75 axially formed with a plurality of separator-side lead wire insertion holes 72 penetrating therethrough, a first part 18a thereof is arranged to extend to an inner side of a filter support portion 51. The first part 18a has an on-axis sectional outer shape formed in an other shape than a circle, e.g. polygonal shape such as a square shape. By making the on-axis sectional outer shape of the ceramic separator 18 main body part 75 departing from a circle as above, it is possible to locally expand a gap 92 defined between an outer peripheral surface of the ceramic separator 18 and an inner surface of the filter support portion 51. This makes it possible to efficiently flow external air into the casing while providing the ceramic separator 18 with a sufficient on-axis sectional area for passing through lead wires.

10 claims: 3 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
A gas sensor (1), comprising:an axially extending detection element (2) ;a cylindrical casing (10) for accommodating said detection element (2);anda ceramic separator (18) in a columnar form extending axially of said casing (10) and having a plurality of lead wire insertion holes (72) formed penetrating therethrough in said axial direction to pass through each lead wire (20, 21) from said detection element (2);and whereinthe external cross-sectional shape (SH) of said ceramic separator (18) defines a continuous single contour on an arbitrary section plane perpendicular to said axis (hereinafter referred to as a contour forming on-axis section plane), and said continuous single contour lies partly inside and partly outside a virtual reference circle (SC) positioned intermediate inscribed and circumscribed circles (IC, OC) about the geometric center of gravity (G) of the external cross-sectional shape.
  2. 2
A gas sensor (1), comprising:an axially extending detection element (2);a cylindrical casing (10) for accommodating said detection element (2);a filter support cylinder (51) provided generally coaxial to said casing (10) over a rear end portion thereof;a ceramic separator (18) in an columnar form extending axially of said filter support cylinder (51) and having a plurality of lead wire insertion holes (72) formed penetrating therethrough in said axial direction to pass through each lead wire (20, 21) from said detection element (2);a flanged separator-side support portion (73) formed in an outer peripheral surface of said ceramic separator (18);a filter (53) arranged on a rear side of said separator-side support portion (73) and on an rear end side of said filter support cylinder (51), which blocks a liquid from passing through but allows a gas to pass therethrough;anda gas communication portion (80, 83) formed in said separator-side support portion (73) in said axial direction.
  3. 9
A gas sensor according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the ceramic separator (18) further comprises an axial bore (93) forming a gas flow passage from the rear of the casing (10) to the detection element (2).
