Combinatorial synthesis and analysis of organometallic compounds and catalysts

Abstract

Methodologies for the synthesis, screening and characterisation of organometallic compounds and catalysts (eg homogenous catalysts), including combinatorial synthesis, screening and characterisation of libraries of supported and unsupported organometallic compounds and catalysts (eg homogenous catalysts). The methods can be applied to the preparation and screening of large numbers of organometallic compounds which can be used not only as catalysts (eg homogeneous catalysts), but also as additives and therapeutic agents.

11 claims: 4 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
A method for preparing and screening an array of supported activated organometallic metal ligand compounds to enable the measurement of the effects of changes in, for example, the ligand core, substituents on the ligand core identity and/or charge of the metal ion, counterions, activators, reaction conditions, solvents, additives, linkers, and nature of the support comprising making a combinatorial array of spatially segregated supported organometallic metal ligand compounds comprising supporting a first organometallic metal ligand compound and supporting a second organometallic metal ligand compound in predefined regions of a substrate, wherein said first and second supported organometallic metal ligand compounds are different from each other, and wherein said support is other than the substrate, activating said organometallic metal-ligand compounds by a chemical reagent, and screening said array at the predefined regions for a useful property relating to an olefin polymerization reaction.
  2. 2
The method of Claim 1, wherein said first organometallic metal ligand compound is supported on a first support and said second organometallic metal ligand compound is supported on a second support.
  3. 3
The method of Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein said first and second organometallic metal ligand compounds are synthesized on said first and second supports, respectively.
  4. 9
    The method of any of of the preceding claims wherein said ligands have a co-ordination number (CN) and charge independently selected from the group consisting of:i. CN = 2, charge = -2 ii. CN = 2, charge = -1 iii. CN = 1, charge = -1 iv. CN = 2, charge = neutral v. CN = 3, charge = -1 vi. CN = 1, charge = -2 vii. CN = 3, charge = -2 viii. CN = 2, charge = -3 and ix. CN = 3, charge = -3.
  5. 10
A method according to any of the preceding claims wherein the metals are derived from metal compounds of the formula:L n MX m wherein L is a neutral Lewis base, n is an integer greater than or equal to zero, M is a metal, X is an anionic ligand, and m is an integer greater than or equal to zero.
  6. 11
A method according to any of the preceding claims wherein the ligands are ancillary ligands.
