Organic light emitting device

Abstract

An organic light-emitting device including a substrate; an anode disposed over the substrate; an organic light-emitting structure disposed over the anode; a cathode buffer layer disposed over the organic light-emitting structure and of a material selected to permit high energy deposition of a cathode; a cathode disposed over the cathode buffer layer; and an interfacial layer provided with an electron-injecting material between the organic light-emitting structure and the cathode buffer layer.

  1. 1
An organic light-emitting device comprising:a) a substrate;b) an anode disposed over the substrate;c) an organic light-emitting structure disposed over the anode;d) a cathode buffer layer disposed over the organic light-emitting structure and of a material selected to permit high energy deposition of a cathode;e) a cathode disposed over the cathode buffer layer;and f) an interfacial layer provided with an electron-injecting material between the organic light-emitting structure and the cathode buffer layer.
  2. 3
A method of making an organic light-emitting device, comprising the steps of:a) providing a substrate;b) disposing an anode over the substrate;c) forming an organic light-emitting structure over the anode;d) forming an interfacial layer provided with an electron-injecting material over the organic light-emitting structure;e) providing a cathode buffer layer over the interfacial layer;and f) forming a cathode over the cathode buffer layer.
  3. 4
The method of making an organic light-emitting device in accordance with claim 3 wherein the light-emitting structure forming step includes the steps of depositing sequentially over the anode an organic hole-transporting layer, an organic light-emitting layer, and an organic electron-transporting layer.
  4. 5
The method of making an organic light-emitting device in accordance with claim 3 wherein the interfacial layer forming step includes the step of selecting an electron-injecting material which has a work function less than 4.0 eV.
  5. 6
The method of making an organic light-emitting device in accordance with claim 5 wherein the interfacial layer forming step further includes the step of depositing the interfacial layer by thermal evaporation.
  6. 7
The method of making an organic light-emitting device in accordance with claim 3 wherein the cathode buffer layer providing step includes the step of selecting a porphyrinic compound as a cathode buffer layer material.
  7. 8
The method of making an organic light-emitting device in accordance with claim 3 wherein the cathode forming step includes the step of selecting a cathode forming material from the group consisting of elemental metals and electrically conductive metal oxides and having a work function greater than 4.0 eV.
  8. 9
The method of making an organic light-emitting device in accordance with claim 8 wherein the cathode forming step includes the step of both thermal evaporating and sputter depositing the cathode.
