Fleet management using mobile stations and wireless data networks

Abstract

The present invention provides a secure means for an authorized entity, from anywhere at any time, to a fleet management system to control the dissemination of mobile data to a specified group of mobile stations (514). A provisioning entity (502) sends a request to a fleet server (506) to push fleet data to a plurality of the mobile stations (514) through a wireless data network. In response, a provisioning interface in a fleet server (506) issues a challenge response which if authenticated permits access to the fleet managing system. The fleet managing system has an account manager managing a plurality of user accounts, each corresponding to one of the mobile stations, and if it is verified that the plurality of the mobile stations are to receive the fleet data, the fleet data is delivered to the plurality of mobile stations through the wireless data network.

13 claims: 5 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
A method for securely managing a plurality of mobile stations serviced by a carrier infrastructure, said method comprising:- receiving a request from a provisioning entity to push fleet data to said plurality of mobile stations through a wireless data network;accessing a fleet managing system after said request is authenticated, said fleet managing system comprising an account manager managing a plurality of user accounts, each corresponding to one of said mobile stations, a memory for storing said fleet data and a provisioning interface coupled to said provisioning entity;verifying if said plurality of the mobile stations are to receive said fleet data by said account manager with respect to said plurality of user accounts;and executing said request to cause said fleet data in said memory to be delivered to said plurality of mobile stations through said wireless data network.
  2. 4
A method as recited in any preceding claim wherein said provisioning entity is selected from a group consisting of a terminal, one of said mobile stations, a computer and a server.
  3. 6
A method as recited in any preceding claim wherein said request comprises a link request to establish a secure communication session with said provisioning entity and an IP address of said provisioning interface.
  4. 9
A method for securely managing a plurality of mobile stations serviced by a carrier infrastructure, said method comprising:- sending a request to a fleet managing system to deliver fleet data to said plurality of mobile stations through a wireless data network, said request including an address identifier identifying a provisioning interface in said fleet managing system;receiving a challenge response from said provisioning interface in response to said request;processing said fleet data to prepare for being delivered;and identifying said plurality of mobile stations to receive said fleet data by grouping identifications of said plurality of mobile stations.
  5. 12
A fleet managing system for securely managing a plurality of mobile stations operating in a wireless data network, said fleet managing system comprising:- a proxy server coupled between said wireless data work and a landline data network, said proxy server comprising:- an account manager managing a plurality of user accounts, each corresponding to one of said mobile stations, and a memory receiving fleet data to be delivered to said mobile stations;a provisioning interface configured to receive a request to push said fleet data in said memory to said plurality of said mobile stations and providing secure access to said server only when said request is authenticated;and a server module configured to respond to said request and after said request is authenticated, identifying said mobile stations with respect to said user accounts and causing said fleet data to be delivered through said wireless data work to said mobile stations.
