  1. 1
A method for controlling devices (130, 132) on a network (108), comprising the steps of:receiving a request to define a policy specifying a behavior for controlling the devices on the network, wherein the request is received at a policy server (122) for controlling devices on the network, the policy server including a directory (210) for storing dynamic policy entries specifying parameters for policies;storing a dynamic policy entry for the requested policy in the directory, the policy entry including attributes specifying the policy;creating, by a policy factory (250) of the policy server, a policy object (221-226) specifying actions of the devices on the network to implement the policy, the policy object containing data and methods for controlling the devices on the network;storing the policy object in a memory;using a topology service (260) of the policy server to maintain topology status information for devices on the network by determining which devices are active and updating a corresponding dynamic policy entry in the directory to reflect changes as to which devices are active;associating the stored policy object with at least one device from the active devices on the network by fetching a list of devices that compose a policy domain from the topology service;and controlling the at least one device in accordance with the stored policy object in order to implement the policy, by selecting devices to implement the policy from the policy domain.
  2. 5
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the act of storing the policy object in the memory involves storing the policy object in a database.
  3. 6
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the act of storing the policy object in the memory involves storing the policy object in a random access memory.
  4. 7
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the policy object includes an object defined within an object-oriented programming system.
  5. 8
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the devices respond to different device-specific commands.
  6. 9
The method of any preceding claim, wherein the at least one device includes a router for routing traffic over the network.
  7. 10
The method of any one of the preceding claims wherein determining which devices are active on the network comprises the topology service periodically polling devices on network.
  8. 11
The method of any one of the preceding claims wherein determining which devices are active on the network comprises the topology service listening to traffic on network to determine which devices are responding to commands.
  9. 12
A computer program comprising instructions that when executed by a computer cause the computer to perform the method of any preceding claim.
  10. 13
A system that uses policies to control devices (130, 132) on a network (108), the system comprising;a policy server (122) coupled to the network, the policy server including a directory (210) for storing dynamic policy entries specifying parameters for policies;a request receiving mechanism, within the policy server, that receives a request to define a policy specifying a behavior for controlling the devices on the network and for storing a dynamic policy entry for the requested policy in the directory, the dynamic policy entry including attributes specifying the policy;a policy creation mechanism (250), within the policy server, that creates a policy object (221-226) specifying actions of the devices on the network to implement the policy, the policy object containing data and methods for controlling the devices on the network;a memory (123), in communication with the policy creation mechanism, that stores the policy object;a topology service (260), within the policy server, that maintains status information for devices on the network by determining which devices are active and updating the dynamic policy entry for the requested policy to reflect changes as to which devices are active;the policy object being operable to fetch a list of devices that compose a policy domain from the topology service for associating the policy object with at least one device from the active devices on the network;and an execution mechanism, within the policy server, that controls the active devices in accordance with the stored policy object in order to implement the policy by selecting devices to implement the policy from the policy domain.
  11. 16
The system of any one of claims 13 to 15, wherein the execution mechanism is configured to monitor status of devices on the network.
  12. 17
The system of any one of claims 13 to 16, wherein the memory includes a database.
  13. 18
The system of any one of claims 13 to 17, wherein the memory includes a random access memory.
  14. 19
The system of any one of claims 13 to 18, wherein the policy object includes an object defined within an object-oriented programming system.
  15. 20
The system of any one of claims 13 to 19, wherein the devices respond to different device-specific commands.
  16. 21
The system of any one of claims 13 to 20, wherein the devices include a router for routing traffic over the network.
  17. 22
The system of any one of claims 13 to 21, wherein, for determining which devices are active on the network, the topology service is operable periodically to poll devices on network.
  18. 23
The system of any one claims 14 to 22, wherein, for determining which devices are active on the network, the topology service is operable to listen to traffic on network to determine which devices are responding to commands.
