4 claims: 1 independent, 3 dependent

  1. 1
A method of forming a plurality of disks (46) in a single sheet of etchable material (90), each disk being suitable for use in an atomising spray nozzle (42), the method being characterized by etching, at each of a plurality of locations on said sheet (90):a disk (46) comprising a shallow bowl-like swirl chamber (56) with smooth, generally vertical outer wall (68) and a smooth, generally horizontal inner wall (70), with a smooth and continuously-curving concave surface extending between and interconnecting the outer wall (68) and inner wall (70);an annular recess (66);one or more non-radial feed slots (58) connecting the recess (66) to the swirl chamber (56) with smooth, trough shaped walls and a smooth continuous junction between said trough-shaped walls and said outer wall (68) and inner wall (70) of said swirl chamber (56);and a discharge orifice (44) co-axial with the swirl chamber (56), each of said disks being shaped such that a vortex is formed in said swirl chamber (56), in use, and liquid supplied to said recess (66) is discharged from said nozzle (42) in a conically-shaped thin film which soon atomises into a fine droplet mist.
  2. 2
A method according to Claim 1, wherein each swirl chamber is etched from one side of the sheet and each discharge orifice is etched from the opposite side of the sheet.
  3. 3
A method according to Claim I or Claim 2, wherein each disk is separable from said sheet, and comprising the step of etching one or more slots (91,92) about each of said disks (46) to form one or more breakable bridges (93,94) connecting each of the disks (46) to the sheet (90).
  4. 4
A method according to Claim 3, comprising the step of breaking each of said one or more breakable bridges to release said disks from said sheet.
