Method of making a coated tampon applicator

Abstract

A tampon applicator member can be made from a roll of sheet-like material. A flowable material is applied to one surface of the sheet-like material and is transformed into a solid polymeric layer. The coated material is separated into a plurality of applicator blanks. A first surface of each blank, corresponding to the first surface of the individual sheet-like web, has an uncoated portion adjacent a first side edge, parallel to the longitudinal axis, and a coated portion. An adhesive is applied to the uncoated portion of the first surface of a blank, and the blank is rolled to form a tubular member having a longitudinal seam. The seam has a first edge of the inner surface of the structural member superposed over and adhered to an uncoated opposite edge of the outer surface of the structural member.

  1. 1
A method of making a tampon applicator member (12; 14) comprising the following steps:a) unwinding a rolled sheet-like material (100) having a first surface and a second surface;b) applying a flowable material (104) to the first surface of the sheet-like material (100) to form a plurality of discrete coated zones (106);c) transforming the flowable material (104) into a solid polymeric layer in the discrete coated zones (106);d) slitting the coated material (104) to form a plurality of individual sheet-like webs (100) of material, wherein a first surface of each individual web (100), corresponding to the first surface of the sheet-like material (100), has an uncoated portion (118) adjacent a first side edge (120), and a coated portion (122);e) separating an individual web (100) into a plurality of applicator blanks (116), having a longitudinal axis which is substantially greater than a transverse axis and wherein a first surface of each blank (116), corresponding to the first surface of the individual sheet-like web (100), has an uncoated portion (118) adjacent a first side edge (120), parallel to the longitudinal axis, and a coated portion (122);f) applying an adhesive (124) to the uncoated portion (118) of the first surface of a blank (116);g) forming the blank (116) around a forming mandrel (130) that is oriented parallel to the longitudinal axis of the blank (116), leaving the first surface outwardly disposed;h) superposing a second side edge (126) of the blank (116), opposite the first side edge (120), over the first side edge (120) to substantially overlap the uncoated portion (118) of the first surface of the blank (116) and to adhere the second surface of the blank (116) , corresponding to the second surface of the sheet-like web (100), to the first surface of the blank (116) to form a longitudinal seam (128), thereby forming the applicator member having an exposed, outwardly disposed surface.
  2. 9
The method of claim wherein the step of applying the flowable material (104) comprises transfer coating the flowable material (104) onto the roll of sheet-like material.
  3. 12
A method of making a tampon applicator member (12; 14) comprising the following steps:a) unwinding a rolled sheet-like material (100) having a longitudinal axis, a first surface, and a second surface;b) applying a flowable material (104) to a portion of the first surface of the sheet-like material (100), wherein the sheet-like material (100) has an uncoated portion (110) adjacent a first side edge (112), parallel to the longitudinal axis, and a coated portion (114);c) transforming the flowable material (104) into a solid coating layer;d) separating the sheet-like material (100) into a plurality of applicator blanks (116), having a longitudinal axis, corresponding to the longitudinal axis of the sheet-like material (100) , which is substantially greater than a transverse axis and wherein a first surface of each blank (116), corresponding to the first surface of the sheet-like material (100), has an uncoated portion (118) adjacent a first side edge (120), parallel to the longitudinal axis, and a coated portion (122);e) applying an adhesive (124) to the uncoated portion of the first surface of the blank (116);f) forming the blank (116) around a forming mandrel (130) that is oriented parallel to the longitudinal axis of the blank (116), leaving the first surface outwardly disposed;g) superposing a second side edge (126) of the blank (116), opposite the first side edge (122), over the first side edge (122) to substantially overlap the uncoated portion (118) of the first surface of the blank (116) and to adhere the second surface of the blank (116) , corresponding to the second surface of the partially coated sheet-like material (100), to the first surface of the blank (116) to form a longitudinal seam (128), thereby forming the applicator member (12;14) having an exposed, outwardly disposed surface.
  4. 13
A tampon applicator meter comprising a tubular structural meter (16) having a longitudinal seam (20), the structural meter (16) having an outer surface (18) that is substantially coated with a solid polymeric layer and an inner surface, wherein the longitudinal seam (20) comprises a first edge (26) of the inner surface of the structural member (16) superposed over and adhered to an uncoated opposite edge of the outer surface (18) of the structural meter (16).
