  1. 1
A method for remotely monitoring the status of a subject, wherein the subject is a human being, comprising the steps of:- providing the subject with a portable monitoring unit (12) comprising: - at least one automatic biological condition sensor (28) of a biological condition associated with the subject;- a portable-unit location-determining device (38);and - a sensor interface unit (20) including: - a programmable microprocessor (22) having an active state and an inactive state, the microprocessor (22) being operable to change from the inactive state to the active state responsive to the occurrence of any of a set of activating parameters for an activation condition selected from the group consisting of a preselected state of the at least one automatic sensor (28), a status signal by the subject, and a request signal from an external source, the microprocessor (22) being in communication with the at least one automatic sensor (28) and the location-determining device (38), a communications device interface (24) in communication with the micro-processor (22), - a first transceiver (26) of a communications device in communication with the communication device interface (24), and - a power supply (42) that provides power to the microprocessor (22), the communication device interface (24), and the first transceiver (26) of the communications device, - programming the microprocessor (22) with a set of activating parameters for the activation conditions;- the microprocessor (22) entering the inactive state;- the microprocessor (22) entering the active state responsive to the occurrence of the activating parameters of one of the activation conditions;- the microprocessor (22) obtaining a status of the subject from the sensor interface unit (20) and the location of the portable unit (12) from the location-determining device (38);and - the microprocessor (22) sending a status message over the first transceiver (26) of the communications device, the content of the status message including the status of the subject and the location of the portable unit (12).
  2. 10
Apparatus (10) for remotely monitoring and assessing the status of a subject, wherein the subject is a human being, the apparatus (10) comprising:a portable monitoring unit (12) comprising: - at least one automatic biological condition sensor (28) of a biological condition associated with the subject;- a portable-unit location-determining device (38);and - a sensor interface unit (20) including: - a programmable microprocessor (22) having an active state and an inactive state, the microprocessor (22) being operable to change from the inactive state to the active state responsive to the occurrence of any of a set of activating parameters for an activation condition selected from the group consisting of a preselected state of the at least one automatic sensor (28), a status signal by the subject, and a request signal from an external source, the microprocessor (22) being in communication with the at least one automatic sensor (28) and the location-determining device (38), - a communications device interface (24) in communication with the microprocessor (22), - a first transceiver (26) of a communications device in communication with the communication device interface (24), and - a power supply (42) that provides power to the microprocessor (22), the communication device interface (24), and the first transceiver (26) of the communications device.
