14 claims: 6 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
A drive comprising a switched reluctance machine having n phase windings where n is an odd integer greater than three and a controller having energisation means adapted to energise the n phase windings such that adjacent phase windings in the machine are not consecutively energised.
  2. 5
A drive as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the energisation means is arranged to energise every second phase winding or every third phase winding.
  3. 8
A drive as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the machine is a linear machine.
  4. 9
A drive as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the machine is inverted.
  5. 10
A drive as claimed in any one of the preceding claims wherein the machine is bi-directional.
  6. 11
A method of operating a switched reluctance drive that has phase energisation means for energising five or more phase windings in a machine, the method comprising consecutively energising non-adjacent phase windings, thereby to reduce torque ripple.
