20 claims: 3 independent, 17 dependent

  1. 1
A method for the production of oxygen which comprises:(i) compressing air to provide a first and a second pressurized air stream;(ii) separating the first pressurized air stream into an oxygen-rich product stream and a nitrogen-rich byproduct stream;(iii) heating the nitrogen-rich byproduct stream and the second pressurized air stream to provide a hot pressurized gas stream by indirect heat exchange with a hot process stream produced by combusting a fuel in a combustor;(iv) work expanding the hot pressurized gas stream to produce shaft work and a reduced-pressure expander discharge stream;and (v) utilizing at least a portion of the shaft work to provide work for the air compression (i), characterized in that the fuel is combusted with the air-containing reduced-pressure expander discharge stream to provide the hot process stream.
  2. 2
A method of Claim 1, wherein the nitrogen-rich byproduct stream is combined with the second pressurized air stream prior to the indirect heat exchange (iii).
  3. 3
A method of Claim 2, wherein the nitrogen-rich byproduct stream is compressed before combining with the second pressurized air stream.
  4. 4
A method of Claim 1, wherein the nitrogen-rich byproduct stream and the second pressurized air stream are separately indirect heat exchanged (iii)and the resultant hot pressurized gas streams separately work expanded.
  5. 5
A method of Claim 4, wherein the shaft work providing work for the air compression (i) is provided by both the expansion of both the nitrogen-rich byproduct stream and the expansion of the second pressurized air stream.
  6. 6
A method of Claim 4 or Claim 5, wherein the separate indirect heat exchange of the nitrogen-rich byproduct stream and of the second pressurized air stream is accomplished by common indirect heat exchange with the same hot process stream.
  7. 8
A method of any one of Claims 1 to 6, wherein the first and second pressurized air streams are obtained by compressing air in a multiple-stage air compressor, withdrawing compressed air from a final stage of the compressor to provide the first pressurized air stream, and withdrawing compressed air from an intermediate stage of the compressor to provide the second pressurized air stream.
  8. 9
A method of any one of Claims 1 to 8, wherein the first and second pressurized air streams are obtained by compressing air in a first air compressor to provide the first pressurized air stream and compressing air in a second air compressor to provide the second pressurized air stream.
  9. 11
A method of Claim 10, wherein the molar flow ratio of the nitrogen-rich byproduct stream to the second pressurized air stream is in the range 1 to 10.
  10. 14
A method of Claim 13, wherein a portion of the synthesis gas provides at least a portion of the fuel for the combustor.
  11. 17
An apparatus for the production of oxygen by a method as defined in Claim 1, which apparatus comprises:compression means (3) for compressing air (1) to provide a first and a second pressurized air stream (5,7);air separation means (15) for separating the first pressurized air stream (5) into an oxygen-rich product stream (17) and a nitrogen-rich byproduct stream (11);heat exchange means (21) for heating the nitrogen-rich byproduct stream (11) and the second pressurized air stream (7) by indirect heat exchange with a hot process stream (23) to provide a hot pressurized gas stream (25);expansion means (27) for work expanding the hot pressurized gas stream (25) to produce shaft work providing work for said compression means (3) and a reduced-pressure expander discharge stream (29);and a combustor (37) for combusting a fuel (35) to provide the said hot process stream(s) (23), characterized in that means (33) are provided to feed the reduced-pressure expander discharge stream (29) to the combustor (37).
  12. 18
An apparatus of Claim 17, comprising means (18) for combining the nitrogen-rich byproduct stream (11) with the second pressurized air stream (7) prior to the heat exchange means (21).
  13. 19
An apparatus of Claim 18, comprising means (213)for compressing the nitrogen-rich byproduct stream (11) before combining with the second pressurized air stream (7).
  14. 20
An apparatus of Claim 17, wherein the nitrogen-rich byproduct stream (11) and the second pressurized air stream (7) are separately indirect heat exchanged in the heat exchange means (401) and the expansion means (27) comprises separate expanders (405, 407) for the resultant hot process streams.
