  1. 1
A cutter element, which comprises:(a) a metal carbide stud (10) having an outer generally hemispherical distal end (14) and a proximal end (12) adapted to be placed into a drill bit;and (b) a layer of polycrystalline abrasive material (34) disposed over said distal end, characterised in that said hemispherical distal end (14) has a series of annular ridges (16, 18, 20) the tops of which are substantially angular such that the angle formed between the slope on either side is less than 120º and there are no surfaces tangent to vertical on such ridges, and in that each successive ridge (16, 18, 20) from the outermost to the innermost is higher so as to retain a hemispherical cross-sectional profile.
  2. 8
A method for making a cutter element, which comprises forming a metal carbide stud (10) having an outer generally hemispherical distal end (14) and a proximal end (12) adapt to be placed into a drill bit;and disposing a layer of polycrystalline material (34) over said distal end (14), characterised in that the outer generally hemispherical distal end (14) of the metal carbide stud (10) is formed having a series of annular ridges (16, 18, 20) the tops of which are substantially angular such that the angle formed between the slope on either side is less than 120° and there are no surfaces tangent to vertical on such ridges (16, 18, 20) and in that the series of annular ridges (16, 18, 20) are formed such that each successive ridge (16, 18, 20) from the outermost to the innermost is higher so as to retain a hemispherical cross-sectional profile.
