A data collection module as claimed in any of the preceding claims in which the portable or hand-held computer comprises a portable digital assistant (PDA),    and/or further preferably comprising a cradle arranged to receive said computer in interface connection,    and/or in which preferably the processor includes a data decoder,    and/or further preferably comprising indicator means,    and/or in which preferably the indicator means comprise at least one of the group of audible indicator means or visual indicator means,    and/or further preferably comprising power supply means,    and/or in which preferably the cradle is arranged to encapsulate the computer at least partially to provide shock or drop protection.
  3. 3
A module as claimed in any of the preceding claims further comprising external communication means,    and/or in which preferably, the external communication means comprises at least one of the group of a modem, radio card, global positioning capability,       and/or further preferably incorporating a user grip,    and/or further preferably including an actuator for actuating data collection, for example a multi-position actuator, each position determining a respective mode of operation,       and/or in which preferably the bar code reader comprises one of a flying spot scanner, a field of view scanner and a wand-type scanner,       and/or further preferably comprising a dedicated computer cradle interface for interface connection to a dedicated computer cradle,       and/or in which preferably the interface comprises a cable or ribbon interface,       and/or in which preferably the module is shaped to be received in a dedicated computer cradle in interface connection,       and/or further preferably including at least one of the group of signature capture/verification capability, or magnetic strip reading capability.
  4. 4
A data collection module for a mobile telephone having an interface, the module including data collection means, data processing means and an interface for connection with the telephone interface.
  5. 5
A data collection module for a portable or hand-held computer having an interface, the module comprising a flying spot bar code scanner means comprising a scanning beam generator, a scanning beam scanner and a scanning beam detector, a processor for processing data scanned and an interface for connection with the computer interface.
  6. 6
A data collection module for a portable or hand-held computer having an interface, the module comprising a field of view graphic indicia reader including a reading beam generator, a reading window and a reading beam detector, a processor for processing data read and an interface for connection with the computer interface.
  7. 7
A data collection module for a portable or hand-held computer having an interface, the module comprising a wand type data reading means and an interface for connection with the computer interface.
  8. 8
A data collection module for a portable or hand-held computer having an interface, the module comprising a module housing including data collection means, data processing means and an interface for connection with the computer interface.
  9. 9
A module as claimed in any of the preceding claims in which the housing is arranged to at least partially encapsulate the computer for drop/shock protection,    and/or in which preferably the housing is arranged to releasably attach to a forward facing portion of the computer,    and/or further preferably including a reading window arranged so as to project from a forward corner of the computer,    and/or in which preferably the reading window is movable to project from a desired front corner of the computer,    and/or in which preferably the housing includes a reading window arranged to be located substantially centrally in relation to the forward end of the computer,    and/or in which preferably the interface is formed integrally with the housing and arranged to connect with the computer interface when the computer is received in the module housing,    and/or in which preferably the interface comprises a ribbon-type interface of sufficient flexibility to allow attachment of the module and sufficient rigidity to maintain the module in place,    and/or in which preferably the data collection means comprises at least one of the group of graphic indicia reading means, magnetic strip reading means or signature capture/verification means.
  10. 10
A method of operation of a portable or hand-held computer and data collection module combination in which the computer and module cooperate as a data collection system.
  11. 11
A method as claimed in any of the preceding claims in which the computer recognises interface connection with the data module and switches operation to data collection mode,    and/or in which preferably the computer recognises attachment from the data collection module and switches operation to PDA mode,    and/or in which preferably the computer includes a display and displays data collected by the data collection module,    and/or in which preferably the computer includes data input means and the scanner is controlled by data input to the computer,    and/or in which preferably the computer displays data collection module status data,    and/or in which preferably the computer displays data collection module battery status,    and/or in which preferably the data collection module includes indicator means and the computer sends indicator actuator signals to actuate the indicator means,    and/or in which preferably the computer is battery powered, and in which an automated test of battery performance comprises measuring the rate of charge of battery voltage as the battery is discharged to a predetermined capacity level and deriving therefrom the expected discharge capacity,    and/or in which preferably the computer and module establish compatibility on interface connection.
  12. 12
A module as claimed in any of the preceding claims in which interface connection is by optical interface, for example infra-red (IRDA) interface.
