Device and method for forming a six-pleated catheter balloon

Abstract

A catheter balloon for use in dilation procedures, such as angioplasty, has multiple pleats formed therein, preferably six such pleats, that may be folded, or wrapped, circumferentially around the catheter to provide a minimized outer diameter when the balloon is deflated. The balloon pleats form six wings in the balloon and each of the balloon wings has a length such that it overlaps a portion of an adjoining wing and each wing extends about one-quarter of the circumference of the catheter shaft. A device for forming such folds in a balloon includes a forming chamber and a plurality of forming elements radially disposed around the balloon.

  1. 1
A device for forming multiple folds in an angioplasty balloon of an angioplasty catheter assembly wherein the catheter assembly includes an elongated catheter with a distal end portion and an inflatable balloon disposed on said catheter distal end portion, the balloon having two leg portions disposed at opposite ends of said balloon which engage said catheter distal end portion, said balloon further having an inflatable body portion intermediate of said balloon leg portions, said balloon body portion having a diameter greater than a diameter of said catheter distal end portion, the device comprising, in combination:a support cradle for supporting the balloon catheter, at least six balloon-contacting members disposed around the support cradle and radially spaced from a central axis of said support cradle, said six balloon-contacting members being capable of rotation toward and away from said support cradle, and means for selectively moving said six balloon-contacting members simultaneously into contact with an inflated balloon supported by said support cradle to thereby form a series of six folds in said inflated balloon.
  2. 5
A device for forming six or more folds in a dilation balloon, the device comprising a base, two walls supported upon the base and spaced apart from each other to define a forming area for said balloon, six forming members supported between said walls and extending longitudinally of said forming area, each of said six forming members having a balloon contacting tip, means for driving said balloon-contacting tips into said forming area and into contact with an inflated balloon disposed therein and for withdrawing said six balloon-contacting members from said forming area.
  3. 7
A method of forming six or more folds in an inflatable balloon attached to a balloon catheter assembly, the balloon catheter assembly including an elongated balloon catheter disposed upon the distal end portion of a catheter shaft, the balloon having a body portion of a preselected working length having a diameter when said balloon is distended, which is greater than a diameter of said distal end portion of said catheter shaft, the method comprising the steps of:inflating the balloon to an inflated state;providing a balloon forming device having a forming chamber and at least six balloon forming elements positioned at predesignated intervals around said forming chamber;placing the inflated balloon within said forming chamber in a spaced apart relationship from said balloon forming elements;drawing said six balloon forming elements simultaneously toward said inflated balloon so that said balloon body portion is contacted by said balloon forming elements;deflating said inflated balloon during said contact to form a plurality of folded portions of said balloon which extend radially outwardly from said catheter shaft.
