Control methods for a shift by wire vehicle transmission including determining clutch status

Abstract

A shift by wire vehicle transmission system includes control methods that are especially useful for controlling the transmission under start-from-stop conditions. Since the master clutch (18) must be manually operated under such conditions, the invention includes a method of determining whether the clutch (18) is open or closed. The rotational speed of the engine output shaft (16) is compared to the rotational speed of the transmission input shaft (20) and if the difference between those speeds is greater than a preselected value, the clutch (18) is determined to be open. Another use of the disclosed method is to provide an indication to the driver whether a desired gear has been engaged. A visual or audible signal indicates to the driver that the desired gear is not yet engaged. Once engagement is confirmed, the signal is turned off and the driver knows that the desired shift has been accomplished.

  1. 1
A method of operating a vehicle transmission having a transmission input shaft that is selectively coupled to an engine output shaft through a clutch, comprising the steps of:(A) determining a rotation speed of the engine output shaft;(B) determining a rotation speed of the transmission input shaft;(C) determining a difference between the speed from step (A) and the speed from step (B);(D) defining an open clutch status condition as one where the difference from step (C) is above a preselected value;and (E) determining whether the condition from step (D) exists.
  2. 9
A system for controlling a vehicle transmission, comprising:an engine output shaft;a transmission input shaft;a clutch that is manually moveable between an open position and an engaged position where the clutch couples said transmission input shaft to said engine output shaft;a first sensor that detects a rotation speed of said engine output shaft;a second sensor that detects a rotation speed of said transmission input shaft;and a controller that communicates with said first and second sensors and determines a difference between said engine output shaft speed and said transmission input shaft speed to thereby determine whether said clutch is in said open position or said engaged position.
  3. 10
A method of controlling a vehicle transmission having a plurality of selectively engageable gear ratios and a shifting module that automatically effects movement of components within the transmission to automatically effect engagement of a selected gear ratio responsive to manual movement of a shift selection lever that is moveable by a vehicle operator to indicate a selection of a desired gear ratio, comprising the steps of:(A) manually moving the shift selection lever;(B) automatically determining the desired gear ratio responsive to the movement of the shift selection lever;(C) providing a signal to the vehicle operator that the desired gear ratio is not engaged;(D) determining that the transmission is in a neutral condition by determining a status of a clutch that is moveable between an open position and a closed position where an input shaft of the transmission is coupled to an output shaft of the vehicle engine, the status of the clutch being determined by performing the substeps of: (1) determining a rotation speed of the engine output shaft;(2) determining a rotation speed of the transmission input shaft;(3) determining a difference between the speed from substep (1) and the speed from substep (2);(4) defining an open clutch status condition as one where the difference from substep (3) is above a preselected value;and (5) determining whether the condition from substep (4) exists;(E) automatically moving components within the transmission, using the shifting module, to engage the selected gear ratio once a neutral condition is confirmed;(F) determining whether the desired gear ratio is engaged;and (G) continuously providing the signal of step (C) to the vehicle operator until the desired gear ratio is engaged.
