23 claims: 3 independent, 20 dependent

  1. 1
An apparatus for measuring the power transmitted by a chain of a bicycle, for use with a bicycle having a first engagement means (16) separated from a second engagement means (20), the chain (18) coupling the first engagement means (16) with the second engagement means (20) so that when the first engagement means (16) is rotated by a power source the chain (18) moves in the direction of the rotation of the first engagement means (16), which in turn causes the chain (18) to rotate the second engagement means (20), wherein the apparatus for measuring further comprises:a vibration sensor (24) adapted to measure the vibration frequency of the chain (18);a sensor (22) that directly or indirectly measures the speed of the chain (18);and a computer (35) adapted to determine the power transmitted by the chain (18) by receiving the results of the vibration measurement and the speed measurement.
  2. 11
The apparatus of claims 7 and 9, wherein the sizes of sprockets used are defined by using cadence signal, wheel speed and the speed of the chain (18).
  3. 12
A method for measuring the power transmitted by a chain of a bicycle (18) for use with a bicycle having a first engagement means (16) separated from a second engagement means (20), the chain (18) coupling the first engagement means (16) with the second engagement means (20) so that when the first engagement means (16) is rotated by a power source the chain (18) moves in the direction of the rotation of the first engagement means (16), which in turn causes the chain (18) to rotate the second engagement means (20), wherein the method further comprises:measuring the vibration frequency of the chain (18);directly or indirectly measuring the speed of the chain (18);receiving the results of the vibration measurement and the speed measurement in a computer;generating a signal representing the power transmitted by the chain (18). rotate said wheel by rotating said second engagement means (20), said first and second engagement means (16, 20) each having at least one sprocket.
  4. 20
The method of claims 17 and 18, wherein the sizes of sprockets used are defined by using cadence signal, wheel speed and the speed of the chain (18).
