Downhole current generator

Abstract

A downhole current generator (34) generates power in a wellbore and includes a power section (36) and a generator section (38). The power section (36) has a sleeve (44) slidably disposed within a housing (42) which oscillates in response to the application of fluid pressure to the current generator (34). A piston (48) is slidably attached to the sleeve (44) and oscillates relative to the sleeve (44) and the housing (42). The piston (87) extends longitudinally into the generator section (38) and has a plurality of magnets (78) attached thereto which oscillate with the piston (48). Wire coil sections (82) are fixed relative to the housing of the generator section (38) and are positioned between the oscillating magnets (78) such that a current is induced in the wire coil sections (82) upon oscillation of the magnets (78)

  1. 1
A downhole current generator (34), comprising:a power section (36);and a generator section (38) which generates a current responsive to oscillations of the power section (36).
  2. 6
A downhole current generator (34) for generating current in a wellbore, comprising:a power section (36), including a first housing (42), a sleeve (44) slidably disposed within said first housing (42) such that said sleeve (44) oscillates axially within said first housing (42) in response to changes in fluid pressure across the power section (36), and a piston (48) slidably disposed within said sleeve (44) to oscillate axially relative said sleeve (44) and said first housing (42);and a generator section (38), including a second housing attached to said power section (36) and defining an interior volume into which said piston (48) of said power section (36) extends, at least two magnets (78) attached to said piston (48) such that said magnets (78) oscillate in response to the oscillation of said piston (48), and a wire coil section (82) fixed relative to said second housing of said generator section (38) and positioned to overlap said magnets (78).
  3. 10
A method of generating power in a wellbore, comprising:oscillating a piston (48) in a downhole current generator (34) responsive to a differential in fluid pressure across the downhole current applied to said downhole current generator (34);and relatively oscillating at least one magnet (78) relative to a wire coil section (82) responsive to the oscillation of said piston (48) to induce a current in said wire coil section (82).
