29 claims: 11 independent, 18 dependent

  1. 1
An electrical device having an audio output, the device comprising a signal processing circuit (8), a Class D amplifier (4), and an audio output element (6), the signal processing circuit (8) operating at a lower supply voltage than the amplifier, characterised in that the supply for the signal processing circuit is generated by a regulator operating in a switched manner.
  2. 5
A device as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the audio output element (6) is a loudspeaker.
  3. 8
A device as claimed in any one of the preceding claims characterised in that the Class D amplifier (4) is housed in a shielded enclosure with the leads into and out of the enclosure being filtered to reduce electromagnetic interference.
  4. 10
A device as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that a clock frequency for producing a pulse width modulated drive for the Class D amplifier (4) is in the range of 25kHz to 120kHz.
  5. 12
A device as claimed in any one of claims 9 to 11, characterised in that the clock generator (20) for use in the pulse-width modulation scheme is used to drive a flip-flop (40) configured to produce a square wave output at half the clock frequency.
  6. 15
A device as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that a comparator is used to compare the voltage supplied to the signal processing circuit with a reference voltage.
  7. 17
A device as cliamed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the signal processing circuit (8) is a radio receiver.
  8. 20
A device as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised in that the signal processing circuit (8) is implemented, at least in part, within an integrated circuit and the transistor circuits within the circuit are optimised to achieve high gain-bandwidth products at low quiescent current.
  9. 22
A device as claimed in any one of claims 17 to 19, characterised in that the radio provides at least one of AM reception in the 500kHz to 1600kHz range, FM reception in the 88MHz to 108MHz range and short-wave reception on any one or more of the shortwave bands.
  10. 25
A device as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised by further comprising a solar panel power supply.
  11. 28
A device as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, characterised by further comprising at least one of a primary cell (2), a secondary cell or a mechanical storage device driving a generator.
