Method for preparing a shell-type catalyst

Abstract

A process for the preparation of a coated catalyst comprising a nonporous inorganic support material having a BET surface area of less than 80 m2/ g, is provided with a catalytically active shell, characterized in that first in one step, a suspension of at least one water-soluble noble metal compound and a substantially water-insoluble coating compound is dried on the support material and then the resulting shell-shaped coated support material in a reductively effective gas flow is activated. With the method of the invention, it is possible to simultaneously coat a non-porous carrier material with active and coating material in a single working step and to achieve higher space velocities without loss of revenue in the selective hydrogenation of acetylene in gas streams with the resulting coated catalyst.
