Thin-walled catheter with high torsional stiffness

Abstract

A steerable catheter comprises a tubular catheter body, a control handle and a tip section. The tubular catheter body has proximal and distal ends and an axial lumen extending therethrough. The catheter body comprises an outer wall and an inner stiffening tube made of polyimide. The control handle is situated at the proximal end of the catheter body. The tip section comprises a flexible tubing having proximal and distal ends and at least one lumen therethrough. The proximal end of the tip section is fixedly attached to the distal end of the catheter body.

10 claims: 5 independent, 5 dependent

  1. 1
A steerable catheter comprising:a tubular catheter body having proximal and distal ends, and an axial lumen extending therethrough, said catheter body comprising an outer wall and an inner stiffening tube made of polyimide;a control handle at the proximal end of the catheter body;and a tip section comprising flexible tubing having proximal and distal ends and at least one lumen therethrough, the proximal end of the tip section being fixedly attached to the distal end of the catheter body.
  2. 4
The catheter of any one of claims 1 to 3, further comprising a tip electrode mounted at the distal end of the tip section and an electrode lead wire electrically connected to the tip electrode, said lead wire extending through a lumen in the tip section, a lumen in the catheter body, and the control handle.
  3. 5
The catheter of any one of claims 1 to 4, further comprising one or more ring electrodes fixedly secured in surrounding relation to the tip section and one or more electrode lead wires each electrically connected to one of the ring electrodes, said lead wires extending through a lumen in the tip section, a lumen in the catheter body, and the control handle.
  4. 6
The catheter of any one of claims 1 to 5, further comprising an optic fiber having proximal and distal ends, said optic fiber extending through a lumen in a catheter body and tip section, said distal end of the optic fiber being substantially flush with the distal end of the tip section.
  5. 10
The catheter of any one of claims 1 to 9, further comprising an electromagnetic mapping sensor in the distal portion of the tip section for producing electrical signals indicative of the location of the electromagnetic mapping sensor.
