  2. 4
The optical disc according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that each video object includes a portion that is specified by different set of the user-defined cell information.
  3. 5
The optical disc according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in at the data area is capable of storing portions of the video object specified as the sequence of the original cells with a seamless reproduction thereof guaranteed.
  4. 7
An apparatus for recording video data onto an optical disc including a data area capable of storing at least one video object including the video data and an index area capable of storing original chain information and at least one set of user-defined chain information, the original chain information and the user-defined chain information being a sequence of original cell information and a sequence of user-defined cell information, respectively, the apparatus comprising:a processing section (2) for receiving an input signal and processing the input signal to obtain the video object to be recorded;a generator (22, 25) for generating the sequence of original cell information in such a manner that each original cell information specifies at least part of the video object as an original cell and indicates start and end portion of a corresponding original cell;an instruction receiver (12) capable of receiving a user instruction;a recorder (100) capable of recording the received video object and the original chain information onto the optical disc;and a controller for controlling the processing section, the generator and the recorder to conduct at least a virtual edit operation and/or a real edit operation, based on the contents of the user instruction,    wherein, when the virtual edit operation is instructed, the controller controls the generator to generate the sequence of the user-defined cell information as the user-defined chain information in such a manner that each user-defined cell information specifies at least part of the at least one video object as a user-defined cell and indicates start and end portions of a corresponding user-defined cell, and    wherein any change of the user-defined chain information causes no change in portions of the video object specified as the sequence of the user-defined cell information.
  5. 9
The apparatus of either of claims 7 or 8, characterized in that the recorder (100) deletes the original chain information when deleting all of the video objects related to the original chain information.
  6. 10
The apparatus according to any of claims 7, 8 or 9, characterized in that when the real edit operation is indicated, the controller controls the generator to update the original chain information using selected one set of the user-defined chain information.
  7. 13
The apparatus of either of claims 11 or 12, characterized in that:each video object includes a plurality of video object units each of which is a minimum unit of access to the optical disc;and when the real edit operation is indicated, the reading means reads out ones of the video object units that include the start and end portions of each user-defined cell indicated by the selected user-defined chain information, the processing section (2) re-encodes the read video object units so that portions of the video object corresponding to the sequence of the user-defined are reproduced seamlessly;and the recorder (100) overwrites the data area using the re-encoded video object units.
  8. 14
A method of recording video data onto an optical disc including a data area capable of storing at least one video object including the video data and an index area capable of storing original chain information and at least one set of user-defined chain information, the original chain information and the user-defined chain information being a sequence of original cell information and a sequence of user-defined cell information, respectively, the method comprising the steps of:a) receiving and processing an input signal to obtain the video object to be recorded;b) generating the sequence of original cell information in such a manner that each original cell information specifies at least part of the video object as an original cell and indicates start and end portion of a corresponding original cell;c) recording the video object and the original chain information onto the optical disc;said method comprising the further steps of: d) receiving a user instruction indicating that at least a virtual edit operation and/or a real edit operation is to be conducted;e) generating the sequence of user-defined cell information as the user-defined chain information in such a manner that each user defined cell information specifies at least part of the at least one video-object as a user-defined cell and indicates start and end portions of a corresponding user-defined cell in response to the receipt of a virtual edit operation as the user instruction, and f) recording the generated user-defined chain information onto the optical disc;wherein any change of the user-defined chain information recorded on the optical disc causes no change in those portions of the video object specified as the sequence of the user-defined cell-information.
  9. 16
A method according to any of claims 14 or 15 wherein the original chain information is deleted when all of the video objects related to the original chain information are deleted.
