  1. 1
An optical disc device comprising:a laser light source (4a;4b) for radiating a laser light beam illuminated on a signal surface of an optical disc (100;110;120) via an objective lens;photodetector (5a;5b) means for detecting the light of the laser light radiated by said laser light source (4a;4b) and reflected from the signal surface of the optical disc (100;110;120);focussing control means for displacing said objective lens responsive to a focussing error signal (FE) generated on the basis of a detection output by said photodetector (5a;5b) means for controlling the focussing state of the beam spot of said laser light beam on said signal surface;disc discrimination means for discriminating the types of the optical discs (100;110;120), based on said focussing error signal (FE), when said objective lens is moved by said focussing control means along the optical axis for focussing search;and control means for setting an operating mode in meeting with the disc types based on a discrimination output by said disc discrimination means,    whereby said photodetector (5a;5b) means has a photodetector (5a;5b) split in at least four segments (S A , S B , S C , S D , S E , S F , S G , S H ), said focussing control means performing focussing control based on a focussing error signal (FE) form said plural segments (S A , S B , S C , S D , S E , S F , S G , S H ) of photodetector (5a;5b), said disc discrimination means is generating a gating pulse by converting a sum signal (PI) of said detection signals (A, B, C, D) of said plural segments (S A , S B , S C , S D , S E , S F , S G , S H ) of photodetector (5a;5b) into binary-valued signals at a pre-set level, said disc discrimination means is converting the focussing error signal (FE) into binary-valued signals for generating discriminating pulses and said disc discrimination means is counting the discriminating pulses for discriminating the disc types of different number of recording layers based on the counted results.
  2. 10
A method for discriminating an optical disc (100; 110; 120) comprising:radiating a laser light beam illuminated on a signal surface of an optical disc (100;110;120) via an objective lens by a laser light source (4a;4b);detecting the light of the laser light radiated by said laser light source (4a;4b) and reflected from the signal surface of the optical disc (100;110;120) by a photodetector (5a;5b) means;displacing said objective lens responsive to a focussing error signal (FE) generated on the basis of a detection output by said photodetector (5a;5b) means for controlling the focussing state of the beam spot of said laser light beam on said signal surface by a focussing control means;discriminating the types of the optical discs (100;110;120) by a disc discrimination means, based on said focussing error signal (FE), when said objective lens is moved by said focussing control means along the optical axis for focussing search;setting an operating mode by a control means in meeting with the disc types based on a discrimination output by said disc discrimination means, splitting a photodetector (5a;5b) of said photodetector (5a;5b) means in at least four segments (S A , S B , S C , S D , S E , S F , S G , S H ), performing focussing control based on a focussing error signal (FE) form said plural segments (S A , S B , S C , S D , S E , S F , S G , S H ) of photodetector (5a;5b), generating a gating pulse by converting a sum signal (PI) of said detection signals (A, B, C, D) of said plural segments of photodetector (5a;5b) into binary-valued signals at a pre-set level, converting the focussing error signal (FE) into binary-valued signals for generating discriminating pulses and counting the discriminating pulses for discriminating the disc types of different number of recording layers based on the counted results.
