  1. 1
A nitrogen oxides detector comprising:a measuring chamber (1a) with an inlet for admitting test gas;an oxygen pump cell (4,5,7) for supplying active oxygen or oxygen ion to said measuring chamber (1a), whereby said oxygen pump cell includes an oxygen ion conductor (4, 4a) forming part of the measurement chamber, an anode (5) attached to one side of said oxygen ion conductor (4a) in said measuring chamber (1a) and a cathode (7) attached to the other side of said oxygen ion conductor (4a), whereby    said anode (5) of said oxygen pump cell is formed of one or more noble metal(s) selected from a group consisting of platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), iridium (Ir), silver (Ag) or one or more of their alloy(s) or complexes of said metals and metal oxides to act as oxidation catalyst;and    a solid state sensor (2,3) for detecting the total amount of NO x characterized in that    the anode of said pump cell has a two layered structure inclusive of oxidation catalytic layers;and the sensor for detecting the total amount of NO x comprises: an oxygen ion conductor (1) forming part of the measuring chamber;a first electrode (2) secured to said ion conductor (1) in said measuring chamber (1a), which first electrode (2) is adapted for sensing oxygen and NO 2 gas, a second electrode (3) secured to said ion conductor (1) in said measuring chamber (1a), which second electrode 20 (3) is adapted for sensing oxygen, and a means for detecting the EMF produced between said first and second electrodes (2,3), so that    when a test gas is introduced into said measuring chamber (1a), NO contained in said test gas is oxidized into NO 2 with active oxygen or oxygen ion through said oxygen pump cell (4,5,7), whereby the total amount of NO x in the test gas is detected on the basis of the level of EMF produced between said first and second electrodes (2, 3).
  2. 5
The nitrogen oxides detector of any one of claims 1 to 4, further comprising a reference electrode (8) at said ion conductor (1) exposed to atmosphere of air or an atmosphere having a constant oxygen content and being isolated from the test gas.
  3. 9
A method for detecting nitrogen oxides in a test gas in the presence of reducing gases using the detector of claims 1-8 and comprising the steps of:supplying, into the measuring chamber (1a), the test gas containing nitrogen oxides NO x and at least one interference gas;supplying through the oxygen pump cell (4,5,7) oxygen or oxygen ion to said measuring chamber (1a) and oxidizing said interference gas and the proportion of NO gas of the NO x in the test gas by the supplied active oxygen or oxygen ion;and detecting a total amount of NO x in the test gas as NO 2 based on the EMF value produced between a first electrode (2) detecting both oxygen and NO 2 gas and a second electrode (3) detecting essentially oxygen.
