In a telecommunications network, a method of authenticating for a first user at a local voice message system a voice message network address of a second user at a networked voice message system, comprising:receiving at the local voice message system multiple voice messages, at least one of which is a first voice message received from the second user at the voice message network address;extracting from each of selected ones of the multiple voice messages including the first voice message, a voice clip comprising a predetermined number of seconds of an initial voice portion of each selected voice message;associating each extracted voice clip with a voice message network address of its originating user;storing the voice clips and the associated voice message network addresses in a network file associated with the local voice message system;generating by the first user at the local voice message system a second voice message directed to the voice message network address of the second user;searching the network file associated with the local voice message system for a voice clip associated with the voice message network address of the second user;and playing the voice clip stored in the network file to the first user if the voice clip is found to be associated with the voice message network address of the second user to authenticate for the first user that the voice message network address of the second user is a correct voice message network address.

    In a telecommunications network, a method of authenticating for a first user of a first voice message system an identity of a second user of a second voice message system, comprising:receiving at the first voice message system multiple voice messages, at least one of which is an original voice message known to be received from the second user and having a voice message address of the second user;extracting from the original voice message the voice message address of the second user and an original voice clip comprising a predetermined number of seconds of an initial voice portion of the original voice message;encoding the original voice clip into an original voice print;storing in a voice print file the original voice print in association with the voice message address of the second user;receiving a questionable voice message addressed to the first user from the voice message address of the second user;extracting from the questionable voice message address the voice message address of the second user and a new voice clip;encoding the new voice clip into a new voice print;searching the voice print file for the voice message address of the second user;retrieving the original voice print associated with the voice message address of the second user;comparing the original voice print and the new voice print;and returning to the first user an authenticating response if the original voice print and the new voice print are substantially the same.
