  1. 1
A user system for using media content in an interactive media program wherein the media content is in the form of data representing a series of successive display frames (F1) having respective frame addresses ("Frame Data") comprising user means (50) for receiving the media content data and further comprising media content display means (34) operable in conjunction with said user means (50) and responsive to the media content data for providing a visual display of the display frames of said media content data while tracking the frame addresses of the display frames being displayed, wherein objects which appear via visual display of said media content are selectable by a pointing device (36) of said user system and defined by their coordinates and extent within said frames and are stored as object data that can be used by said user system,     characterized by said system having:a) second user means (46) for receiving object mapping data ("N Data") separately from said media content data received by said first user means (50), said object mapping data specifying display location coordinates of said objects (A, etc.) intended to be rendered interactive as they appear in said display frames of said media content wherein said object mapping data for each mapped object comprise coordinate location data representing the display location coordinates of the object as it appears in a display frame of said media content and a frame address for the display frame in which the object appears;said object mapping data ("N Data") being maintained as logically and physically separate data from the media content data, such that the media content data remain uncorrupted by and unembedded within the object mapping data ("N Data"), b) an interactive media program (IDM) operable in conjunction with said second user means (46) and said media content display means (34) and responsive to the object mapping data ("N Data") for providing program linkages for connecting objects (A, etc.), for which display location coordinates and frame addresses of the display frames of said media content are specified by the object mapping data ("N Data") to respective other functions to be performed upon user selection of the objects in conjunction with display of the media content by said media content display means (34);and c) said user system (32), including said first and second user means and said pointing device (36) for operating the interactive media program by detecting when an object appearing within the display location coordinates of the object mapping data ("N Data") for said object in a displayed frame of said media content having a frame address corresponding to the frame address of the object mapping data ("N Data") for said object is selected by a user and by performing the function linked by the interactive media program linkage thereto.
  2. 7
A system for authoring an interactive media program in conjunction with media content in the form of data representing a series of successive display frames (F1) having respective frame addresses (40) ("Frame Data"), comprising media display means (34) responsive to said media content data for providing a visual display of the display frames of said media content while tracking the frame addresses of the display frames being displayed,     characterized by said system having:a) an editing subsystem (50a) for receiving the media content data, said media content display means (34) being operable in conjunction with said editing subsystem (50a);b) an object mapping subsystem (50b, 50c) for generating object mapping data ("N Data") for objects (A, etc.) to be rendered interactive in the display frames of said media content as displayed by said media content display means, said object mapping subsystem having an object mapping tool (50b) for marking an object as it appears in a display frame having a given frame address and generating display location coordinates for the object, wherein said N Data for each mapped object comprise the display location coordinates and frame address of the object as it appears in the display frame of said media content, said N Data being maintained as logically and physically separate data from the media content data, such that the media content data remain uncorrupted by and unembedded with the N Data;and c) interactive media program development tools including a hyperlinking tool (50d) for defining linkages connecting respective objects as mapped by said object mapping subsystem (50a, 50b) to other functions to be performed upon user selection of the objects in conjunction with display of the media content.
  3. 10
An interactive digital media product in the form of a digital data storage disk (64),     characterized by :a) a main disk sector (66a) where a first component of media content data in the form of a series of successive digitized display frames having respective frame addresses ("Frame Data") are stored;and b) a separate disk sector (66b) where a second component of object mapping data specifying display location coordinates and frame addresses of designated objects appearing in the display frames of the media content ("N Data") are stored,    wherein said first component of Frame Data for the media content is stored physically and logically separate from the second component of object mapping data ("N Data") for the designated objects, such that the disk can be played both on systems for playback of non-interactive media programs using only the Frame Data and on systems for playing of interactive digital media programs using the Frame Data and the object mapping data ("N Data").
