12 claims: 4 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
A back pressure regulator device for a print cartridge (14) having an ink-jet print head (40) and a cavity to be filled with ink (38) in fluid communication with the print head (40), the device comprising:a pressure regulator (37) for supplying ink to the print head (40) at a substantially constant pressure difference to ambient pressure, the pressure regulator (37) being adapted to be in fluid communication with the cavity to be filled with ink (38);a flexible bag (52) maintained at ambient pressure;a valve adapted for coupling said device to a supply of ink;a pressure regulator actuator (48) causing the valve to open and shut in response to changes in the internal volume of the bag to control flow of ink into the cavity (38);and urging means (50, 53, 53'), operatively connected with the bag, for urging the pressure regulator actuator (48) against the bag with a substantially constant force.
  2. 7
The apparatus of any one of claims 4 to 6, wherein a first lung of the lungs (82, 82') has a region of enhanced sensitivity to differential pressure, said region bearing against the actuator (48).
  3. 10
The apparatus of any one of claims 4 to 6, wherein each lung of the lungs (82, 82') has a region of enhanced sensitivity to differential pressure, each of said regions bearing against the other region.
  4. 11
The apparatus of any one of claims 3 to 10 further comprising:a remote ink reservoir (28) containing ink (29) under a pressure of P1;a conduit (30) for ink selectively connecting the remote ink reservoir (28) and the cavity to be filled with ink (38);and a predetermined area within the print cartridge (14) to collect air, said bag (52) being in fluid communication with the predetermined area,    wherein the pressure regulator (37) supplies ink to the print head (40) at a substantially constant back pressure of P2, P1 being substantially greater than P2.
