  1. 1
A spinal fusion implant for placement between adjacent vertebral bodies (V 1 , V 2 ) to achieve bone fusion therebetween, said spinal fusion implant comprising:a housing (30, 130, 230, 330, 430, 730, 830) for placement between and in contact with the adjacent vertebral bodies (V 1 , V 2 ), said housing (30, 130, 230, 330, 430, 730, 830) having an interior space (36, 136, 236, 436) and openings (42, 142, 242, 342, 742) in communication with said interior space into which bone from the adjacent vertebral bodies (V 1 , V 2 ) grows through said openings (42, 142, 242, 342, 742));characterized by comprising a power supply (60, 60', 160, 460, 760, 860) within said interior space (36, 136, 236, 436) of said housing (30, 130, 230, 330, 430, 730, 830), said power supply (60, 60', 160, 460, 760, 860) being adapted to deliver an electrical charge at a predetermined polarity and extending within said housing (30, 130, 230, 330, 430, 730, 830) at a distance therein in order to occupy part of the interior space (36) to allow for bone fusion enhancing material to be filled into the remainder of the interior space (36) and to permit bone growth from the adjacent vertebral bodies through said openings (42, 142, 242, 342, 742) and into said interior space (36);said housing (30) having at least a first portion being electrically conductive and being electrically connected to said power supply (60) to be electrically charged thereby;the spinal implant further comprising a transferring means (50, 80, 80', 150, 462, 562) interposed between said power supply (60, 60', 160, 460, 760, 860) and said first portion for transferring a charge from said power supply (60, 60', 160, 460, 760, 860) to said first portion to promote bone growth through the openings (42, 142, 242, 342, 742) into the interior space (36).
  2. 5
The spinal implant of any one of the above claims, wherein said housing (230) has a coil (200) wrapped around said housing (230), said coil (200) being electrically conductive and being electrically insulated from said housing (230) by a non-conductive material.
  3. 8
The spinal implant of either claim 6 or 7, wherein said external thread (200) conducts electrical current to said interior space (236).
  4. 9
The spinal implant of any one of claims 1-4, wherein said housing (430) further includes an opening (420) passing completely through said housing (430) such that said opening (420) communicates with each of the adjacent vertebral bodies (V 1 , V 2 ) to be joined, and a conductive coil (425) disposed about said opening (420) and coupled to said power supply (460) .
  5. 11
The spinal implant of either claim 9 or 10, wherein said interior space (436) is in communication with said opening (420) and said coil (425).
  6. 12
    The spinal implant of any one of the above claims, wherein said said power supply (60, 60', 160, 460, 560, 760, 860) delivers negative electrical charge to said first portion (200, 350, 850) of said housing (30, 130, 230, 330, 430, 530, 730, 830).
  7. 14
The spinal implant of any one of claims 12-13, further comprising a controller (70) for controlling the delivery of said electric charge.
  8. 20
The spinal implant of any one of claims 1-15, wherein said power supply (60) comprises a surgically implantable battery.
