  1. 1
A telephone handset (1) having a display (3) and a keypad (2), wherein said keypad (2) includes a group of keys (7) for entering alphanumeric signs and a key (10) for navigating a cursor in the display (3), wherein said navigation key (10) is placed between the display (3) and the group of alphanumeric keys (7), and said navigation key (10) includes a roller body (20), which is essentially cylindrical, characterised in that the display (3) and the keypad (2) are formed on a front surface of the handset, and in that the roller body (20) extends partly through an opening in the front surface of the phone and has a length and diameter of the same size as the width of the keys in said group of keys (7) for entering alphanumeric sign, and in that the navigation key (10) further comprises:a carrier (23) for carrying said roller body (20);a supporting means (27) supporting said carrier (23);said carrier (23) being hinged relatively to the supporting means (27) by cooperating hinging parts (28, 34);biasing means (26) for urging the carrier (23) and the supporting means (27) away from each other at a distance from said hinging parts (28, 34);and detection means (33) for detecting a force counteracting the biasing force providing by said biasing means (26) and for providing a second control signal in dependence thereon.
  2. 6
A telephone handset according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the carrier (23) furthermore carries an encoder means (5a) aligned with the roller body (20) for detecting the rotation of said body (20) and for providing a first control signal in dependence thereon.
  3. 7
A navigation key structure suitable for use in a telephone handset for providing control signals in dependence on the operation thereof, and comprising:a roller body (20) acting as a navigation key;a carrier (23) for carrying said roller body;said carrier (23) being supported by supporting means (27);biasing means (26) for urging the carrier (23) and the supporting means (27) away from each other;and detection means (33) for detecting a force counteracting the biasing force provided by said biasing means (26) and for providing a control signal in dependence thereon;characterised in that said carrier (23) is hinged relatively to the supporting means (27) by cooperating hinging parts (28, 34) located at a distance from the biasing means (26).
  4. 11
A navigation key structure according to claims 8 to 10, wherein the roller body (20) is shaped as a barrel having a through bore for pivotal reception of said shaft part (24).
  5. 18
A navigation key structure according to any one of claims 7 to 17, wherein the detection means is a pressure sensitive micro switch (33).
  6. 19
An encoder unit (59) for use in a telephone handset having a navigation key (10) which is provided as a roller body (20), said roller body (20) being provided with a pattern which is readable by the encoder unit (59), and said roller body (20) being allowed to adopt a predetermined number of valid states, characterised in that the pattern provided on the roller body (20) is provided as metallic areas (56) on an insulating surface (55), and the encoder unit (59) includes a plurality of sliding shoes (76, 77, 78) sliding over the pattern upon turning of the roller body (20), wherein a detected contact between the sliding shoes (76, 77, 78) and the pattern is validated by successively testing the contact between the sliding shoes (76, 77, 78) and the pattern one by one, said testing being performed by applying a signal to one of the sliding shoes (76, 77, 78) and detecting the responses on the other sliding shoes (76, 77, 78).
