A steerable catheter (10) comprising:a catheter body (12) having an outer wall (22), proximal and distal ends and a lumen (18) extending therethrough;the outer wall being made of polyurethane or nylon ;the catheter body further having a braided mesh of stainless steel or the like ;a control handle (16) at the proximal end of the catheter body;a tip section (14) comprising a flexible tubing (19) having proximal and distal ends and at least one lumen (30;32;34) extending therethrough, wherein the proximal end of the tip section is fixedly attached to the distal end of the catheter body;an electromagnetic sensor (72) in the distal portion of the tip section for producing electrical signals indicative of the location of the electromagnetic sensor;an electromagnetic sensor cable (74) electrically connected to the electromagnetic sensor and extending through the tip section, catheter body and control handle for carrying electrical signals from the electromagnetic sensor to a circuit board (64);a tip electrode (36) mounted at the distal end of the tip section, said tip electrode having a distal face;means (42) for deflecting the tip section by manipulation of the control handle;and a tubular housing (21) having distal and proximal ends, wherein the distal end of the tubular housing is fixedly attached to the proximal end of the tip electrode, and the proximal end of the tubular housing is fixedly attached to the distal end of the flexible tubing of the tip section, characterised in that : the braided mesh is embedded in the outer wall;the catheter is a direct myocardial revascularization catheter (10);the outer wall (22) has a distal face and an inner diameter that defines said lumen (18);the tip electrode (36) has an optic fiber lumen therethrough;and the catheter further comprises: an optic fiber (46) having a distal end and a proximal end, said optic fiber extending through the control handle, a lumen (18) in the catheter body, a lumen (34) in the tip section and the optic fiber lumen in the tip electrode, said distal end of the optic fiber being substantially flush with the distal end of the tip electrode;and a stiffening tube (20) located within said lumen (18) and having an outer diameter slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the outer wall (22) of the catheter body, and the stiffening tube being made of polyimide.
