14 claims: 11 independent, 3 dependent

  1. 1
A portable computer system which optionally requires entry of a boot password during system initialization, the portable computer system comprising:at least one microprocessor (225);a non-volatile memory (255) containing settings for administrative configurations;a memory which is connected to be read/write accessible by said microprocessor;a Power-On Self-Test (POST) procedure (S 101) executed during initialization of the portable computer system, wherein said POST procedure can require a user to enter a boot password to enable system operation, and if a boot password is required and a valid boot password is not entered, initialization will not be completed and the portable computer system will be non-operational (S115);input/output circuitry operatively connected to said microprocessor;and an RF receiver (295), that is active even when the system is turned off, operatively connected to write to said non-volatile memory, said receiver being receptive, whether the portable computer is on or off, to both a security activation command and a periodic enabling signal, received from an RF transmitting source via a communication system;wherein said portable computer system includes at least one security feature which can be activated by commanding said receiver to modify (S170) at least one of said settings in said non-volatile memory, either by receiving a security activation command through said communication system, or if the receiver fails to receive said periodic enabling signal within a required time delay margin;and wherein said security feature includes (i) when the portable computer is off, requiring entry of a valid boot password during subsequent system initialization, or (ii) when the portable computer is on, forcing a reset of the computer and requiring entry of a valid boot password to enable system operation during subsequent system initialization.
  2. 3
The system of any of the preceding claims, wherein said system will not function without said receiver (295).
  3. 4
The system of any of the preceding claims, wherein said receiver (295) is a wireless device.
  4. 5
The system of any of the preceding claims, wherein said communication system uses radio frequency.
  5. 6
The system of any of the preceding claims, wherein said receiver is integrated into a system board which also carries said microprocessor (225).
  6. 7
The system of any of the preceding claims, wherein said receiver is active even when said microprocessor (225) is asleep.
  7. 8
The system of any of the preceding claims, wherein said receiver is also operatively connected to selectively force said microprocessor (225) into a reset procedure.
  8. 9
The system of any of the preceding claims, wherein operation of said system is automatically disabled if an electronic key bit is set in memory (255).
  9. 10
The system of any of the preceding claims, wherein operation of said system is automatically disabled if said receiver is not operational.
  10. 11
A method for securing a portable computer system which optionally requires entry of a boot password during system initialization, the method comprising the steps of:receiving a periodic enabling signal from an RF transmitting source whether the computer is on or off;and activating at least one security feature either when the next of said periodic enabling signals is not received or when a security activation command is received;and enabling said security feature by setting a bit in non-volatile memory (255);responding to the setting of said bit by (i) when the portable computer is off, requiring entry of a valid boot password during subsequent system initialization, or (ii) when the portable computer is on, forcing a reset of the computer and requiring entry of a valid boot password to enable system operation during subsequent system initialization.
  11. 14
The method of any of claims 11 to 13, wherein said security feature disables the operation of the system.
