7 claims: 1 independent, 6 dependent

  1. 1
A cruise control system (30) for a vehicle comprising:a vehicle speed detecting means (34) for detecting a first speed (V 1 )of the vehicle;an inter-vehicle distance detecting means (20,21,22) for detecting an inter-vehicle distance (L) of a preceding vehicle a head of said vehicle;a second vehicle speed detecting means (22) for detecting a second vehicle speed (V 2 ) of the preceding vehicle;an acceleration/deceleration means (25,26) for accelerating or decelerating the vehicle;a safe inter-vehicle distance calculating means (41) for calculating a safe inter-vehicle distance (L s ) based on the first vehicle speed (V 1 ) and the second vehicle speed (V 2 );a constant speed running mode selecting means (40,42) for selecting a constant speed running mode wherein the first speed (V 1 ) of the vehicle is held at a set vehicle speed (V 0 ) according to the acceleration/deceleration means when the inter-vehicle distance (L) is larger than the safe inter-vehicle distance (L s );a following-behind running mode selecting means (43) for selecting a following-behind running mode wherein the inter-vehicle distance (L) is held at a predetermined value according to the acceleration/deceleration means when the inter-vehicle distance (L) is smaller than the safe inter-vehicle distance (L s );and characterized in that a vehicle speed updating means (45) is provided for updating the set vehicle speed (V 0 ) to a speed around an average vehicle speed (V n ) within a specified time (T 1 ) when the following-behind running mode lasts for more than the specified time (T 1 ).
  2. 2
A cruise control system as claimed in Claim 1, characterized in that it comprises:a braking operation detecting means (33) for detecting a braking operation;a brake pressure detecting means (35) for detecting a brake pressure (P b );and a cruise control restoring means (46) for restoring operation of the cruise control system (30) when stopped by a braking operation during running in the following-behind running mode after the braking operation is finished and if the brake pressure (P b ) is lower than a specified value (P c ) and the first vehicle speed (V 1 ) is higher than a lower limit vehicle speed (V L ).
  3. 3
A cruise control system as claimed in Claim 2, characterized in that said lower limit vehicle speed (V L ) is established to be lower than the first vehicle speed (V 1 ) when the braking operation starts.
  4. 4
A cruise control system as claimed Claim 1 or Claim 2, characterized in that when the following-behind running mode lasts for the specified time (T 1 ), the set vehicle speed (V 0 ) is updated by a vehicle speed higher than the average vehicle speed (V n ).
  5. 5
A cruise control system as claimed Claim 1 or Claim 2, characterized in that the vehicle speed updating means (45) updates the set vehicle speed (V 0 ) into a new vehicle speed when the vehicle speed (V r ) is smaller than the set vehicle speed (V 0 ).
  6. 6
A cruise control system as claimed Claim 1 or Claim 2, characterized in that in the inter-vehicle distance detecting means (20,21,22) the inter-vehicle distance (L) to the preceding vehicle is detected by processing image signals from cameras (21).
  7. 7
A cruise control system as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, characterized in that said predetermined value is equal to the safe inter-vehicle distance (L s ).
