11 claims: 8 independent, 3 dependent

  1. 1
A process for preparing a block copolymer comprising a hydrophobic block (A) comprising one or more hydrophobic monomers having a log P value of greater than 0.8, and a hydrophilic block (B) comprising one or more hydrophilic monomers having a log P value of up to 0.8, said process comprising:(a) polymerizing at least one hydrophobic monomer to prepare a hydrophobic block, using a free radical polymerization process,    wherein a stable free radical agent is employed during the polymerization, thereby preserving a stabilized active polymerization site on the hydrophobic block;(b) adding at least one hydrophilic monomer to the stabilized active hydrophobic block of (a);and (c) further reacting the mixture of (b) to effect polymerization of said hydrophilic monomer, thereby preparing a hydrophilic block;wherein the polymerization of the hydrophilic monomer is conducted in an amidic solvent in which the hydrophobic block and the at least one hydrophilic monomer are sufficiently soluble to permit polymerization.
  2. 4
The process of any preceding claim wherein the at least one hydrophilic monomer comprises an acid, a salt or anhydride of an acid, an unsubstituted amide, a N-hydrocarbyl-substituted amide, a sulfoalkyl ester, or a sulfoalkyl amide.
  3. 5
The process of any preceding claim wherein the hyrophilic monomer is (i) 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid, 2-sulfoethyl methacrylate, styrenesulfonic acid, vinylsulfonic acid, allylsulfonic acid, or methallylsulfonic acid, or a salt thereof;or (ii) acrylamide, methacrylamide, or a N-hydrocarbyl-substituted derivative thereof, wherein each hydrocarbyl group contains 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or a mixture of (i) and (ii).
  4. 6
The process of any preceding claim wherein the amidic solvent has a Hildebrand solubility parameter of 20-26 MPa.
  5. 7
The process of any preceding claim wherein the amidic solvent comprises formamide, acetamide, propionamide, butyramide, pyrrolidone, caprolactam, piperidinone, piperazinedione, acrylamide, methacrylamide, or their N-substituted derivatives, or an N-substituted urea, or mixtures thereof.
  6. 9
The process of any preceding claim wherein the stable free radical agent is a nitroxy radical of the general formula R 1 R 2 N-O•, where R 1 and R 2 are tertiary alkyl groups, or where R 1 and R 2 together with the N atom form a cyclic structure having tertiary branching at the positions alpha to the N atom.
  7. 10
The process of any preceding claim wherein the polymerization is conducted in the presence of an acid or an amine salt thereof, other than the hydrophilic monomer, in an amount suitable to enhance the rate of polymerization.
  8. 11
The process of any preceding claim wherein the ratio of die weight of monomers charged to prepare the hydrophobic block to the weight of monomers charged to prepare the hydrophilic block is 10:1 to 1:20.
