  1. 1
Apparatus for blending a first image (301) comprising a first plurality of pixels with a second image (302) comprising a second plurality of pixels, each of the first plurality of pixels comprising a plurality of bits and having associated therewith a chroma key function indicating whether the pixel is to be treated as completely transparent, said plurality of bits containing an alpha control bit indicating whether the pixel should be blended, and containing remaining bits constituting a pixel value, the apparatus comprising:means (304, 307) for determining whether the chroma key function for each pixel in the first image (301) is set and, responsive to such determination if said chroma key function is set, causing a corresponding pixel value from the second image (302) to be output as a result with no component from the first image (301);and means (305, 306) for determining, for those pixels for which said chroma key function is determined as being not set, whether the alpha control bit for each pixel in the first image (301) is set and, responsive to such determination if said alpha control bit is set, causing the remaining bits of said each pixel to be output as a result with no component from the second image (302), and otherwise, when said alpha control bit is not set, blending said remaining pixel bits with a corresponding pixel value from the second image in accordance with a stored alpha value.
  2. 6
Apparatus for blending a first image comprising a first plurality of pixels with a second image comprising a second plurality of pixels, each of the first plurality of pixels comprising a displayable pixel value and an alpha control bit indicating whether the displayable pixel value should be blended with a corresponding displayable pixel value from the second image, the apparatus comprising:a memory (501) for storing said first image;a line buffer (504) for storing a line of pixels of the first image read from the memory;a multiplexer (505) having a first input for receiving a line of pixels from said memory (501), a second input for receiving a line of pixels from said line buffer (504) and an output which is selected from one of the first and second inputs in accordance with a control signal (CLK320);an alpha generator circuit (507) responsive to said alpha control bit of a current pixel of the first image which is output from said multiplexer (505), for outputting a stored alpha value (α) comprising a plurality of bits;an alpha multiplier (509) for multiplying the alpha value output by said alpha generator circuit (507) with the displayable pixel value of said current pixel of the first image;blending means (520, 521) for multiplying each displayable pixel value in the second image with a factor of one minus said alpha value and adding the result to an output of said alpha multiplier (509) and a chroma comparison circuit (502) which compares each of said displayable pixels values in the first image with a stored chroma value and, responsive to a determination, if the displayable pixel value matches the stored chroma value, prevents the blending such that said corresponding pixel from said second image is outputted from said blending means.
  3. 10
A method for blending a first image (301) comprising a first plurality of pixels with a second image (302) comprising a second plurality of pixels, each of the first plurality of pixels comprising a plurality of bits and having associated therewith a chroma key function indicating whether the pixel is to be treated as completely transparent, said plurality of bits containing an alpha control bit indicating whether the pixel should be blended, and containing remaining bits constituting a pixel value, the method comprising the step of:(1) determining whether the chroma key function for each pixel in the first image is set and, responsive to such determination, if said chroma key function is set, causing a corresponding pixel value from the second image to be output as a result with no component from the first image;wherein the first image (301) comprises an overlay image generated by an application program and the second image (302) comprises a live video image, (2) determining whether the alpha control bit is set for each pixel in the first image for which the chroma key function is not set and, responsive to such determination, if said alpha control bit is set, causing said remaining bits to be output as a result with no component from the second image;and (3) for each pixel in the first image for which the determination in step (2) resulted in that said alpha control bit is not set, blending said remaining bits with a corresponding pixel value from the second image in accordance with a stored alpha value.
