21 claims: 8 independent, 13 dependent

  1. 1
A currency scanning and counting machine for scanning and identifying bills (17) at a rate in excess of 800 bills per minute, comprising:an input receptacle (12) for positioning stacks of currency bills to be identified;a single output receptacle (20) for stacking the processed bills;a bill separation station (14) for acting upon the bills in the input receptacle (12) to separate one bill at a time for being sequentially relayed by a bill transport mechanism (16);whereby the bill transport mechanism (16) transports the bills from the input receptacle (12) to the output receptacle (20);characterised by a pair of optical scanheads (18A, 18B) disposed on opposite sides of the transport path defined by the bill transport mechanism (16), the pair of optical scanheads (18A, 18B) scanning and identifying the currency denomination of a bill.
  2. 2
A currency scanning and counting machine as claimed in Claim 1 wherein each optical scanhead (18A, 18B) additionally employs a detection means.
  3. 3
A currency scanning and counting machine as claimed in Claim 2 wherein the detection means is a magnetic sensor.
  4. 4
A currency scanning and counting machine as claimed in Claim 2 wherein the detection means is an electrical conductivity sensor.
  5. 5
A currency scanning and counting machine as claimed in Claim 2 wherein the detection means is a capacitive sensor.
  6. 6
A currency scanning and counting machine as claimed in Claim 2 wherein the detection means is an optical sensor.
  7. 7
A currency scanning and counting machine as claimed in Claim 6 wherein each optical scanhead (18A, 18B) comprises a pair of light sources (22) directing light onto the bill transport path.
  8. 8
A currency scanning and counting machine as claimed in Claim 7 wherein the light sources (22) illuminate a substantially rectangular light strip (24) upon a currency bill positioned on the transport path defined by the bill transport mechanism (16) adjacent the scanhead (18A, 18B).
  9. 9
A currency scanning and counting machine as claimed in Claim 8 wherein a photo detector (26) is positioned between the two light sources for sensing the light reflected off the illuminated strip (24).
  10. 10
A currency scanning and counting machine as claimed in Claim 9 wherein an analogue-to-digital (ADC) converter unit (28) is provided for converting the analogue output of the photo detector (26) into a digital signal.
  11. 11
A currency scanning and counting machine as claimed in Claim 10 wherein the digital output of the analogue-to-digital (ADC) converter unit (28) is fed to a central processing unit (CPU) (30).
  12. 12
A currency scanning and counting machine as claimed in one of the preceding claims wherein each optical scanhead (18A, 18B) functions to provide an analogue representation of the variation in reflected light, which in turn represents the variation in the dark and light content of the printed pattern of indicia on the surface of the bill.
  13. 13
A currency scanning and counting machine as claimed in one of the preceding claims, wherein the pair of optical scanheads (18A) comprises an upper and a lower scanhead (18A), where the upper scanhead (18A) is located slightly upstream relative to the lower scanhead (18B).
  14. 14
The currency evaluation device of Claim 1 further comprising means for flagging a bill (17) when the denomination of said bill (17) is not determined by said discriminating unit.
  15. 15
The currency evaluation device of Claim 1 further comprising means for flagging a bill (17) meeting or failing to meet a certain criteria.
  16. 16
The currency evaluation device of Claim 15 further comprising an authenticating unit, said authenticating unit performing one or more authenticating tests on said bills and wherein said certain criteria is a bill (17) failing one or more of said one or more authenticating tests and wherein said means for flagging causes said transport mechanism (16) to halt when said bill (17) fails one or more of said one or more authenticating tests.
  17. 17
The currency evaluation device according to Claims 14 or 15 wherein said means for flagging causes said transport mechanism (16) to halt.
  18. 18
The currency evaluation device according to any of Claims 14-17 wherein said means for flagging causes said transport mechanism to halt with said bill (17) being the last bill (17) transported to said output receptacle (20).
  19. 19
The currency evaluation device according to any of Claims 14-17 wherein said means for flagging a bill (17) causes said transport mechanism (16) to halt with said bill (17) being positioned at an identifiable location in said output receptacle (20).
  20. 20
The currency evaluation device according to any of Claims 16-19 wherein said flagged bill (17) is removed from the device before said transport mechanism (16) is restarted.
  21. 21
The currency evaluation device according to any of Claims 1-20 wherein said transport mechanism (16) transports bills (17) at a rate of at least about 1000 bills (17) per minute.
