  1. 1
An electrostatic actuator, comprising:a first member (14) having a first opposed surface (15), the first opposed surface including an array (17) of driven electrodes (32, etc.), the driven electrodes having a pitch p r ;a second member (12) having a second opposed surface (13), the second opposed surface including an array (11) of drive electrodes (16, etc.);a support (120) disposed between the first member and the second member to support the first member and the second member adjacent one another, with the first opposed surface spaced apart from the second opposed surface by a spacing d , the spacing and the pitch having a ratio p r / d of less than eight, and to permit movement of one of the first member and the second member relative to the other;and means (58, 60) for establishing a spatially substantially alternating voltage pattern on the array of driven electrodes;and means (30, 31) for establishing a spatially substantially alternating voltage pattern on the array of drive electrodes, and for selectively imposing a variation on the substantially alternating voltage pattern on the array of drive electrodes to move the one of the first member and the second member relative to the other.
  2. 17
A method of driving an electrostatic actuator, the method comprising:providing a first member (14) and a second member (12), each of the first member and the second member including an opposed surface (15, 13);disposing the opposed surface of first member opposite the opposed surface of the second member with a spacing of d to allow one of the first member and the second member to move relative to the other in a direction parallel to the opposed surfaces;establishing a spatially substantially alternating voltage pattern on the opposed surface of the first member, and a static, spatially substantially alternating voltage pattern on the opposed surface of the second member, each alternating voltage pattern defining a waveform having a primary spatial wavelength λ satisfying the spatial wavelength/spacing condition λ/ d < 16;and selectively imposing a variation on the alternating voltage pattern on the opposed surface of the first member to move the one of the first member and the second member relative to the other.
