Method and system for determining a position of a target vehicle utilizing two-way ranging

Abstract

A communication system transmitting messages includes two-way ranging by communicating between a target vehicle (18) and a traffic controller station (20) through a plurality of satellites (14, 24). A set of the plurality of satellites (14) may be used simultaneously or sequentially to transmit and receive signals from the ground station (20) to a target vehicle (18), preferably an aircraft in the preferred embodiment. Each aircraft includes a particular ranging code combined with a message signal to selectively process the ranging data supplied to each vehicle (12). The ranging determination may be used in conjunction with alternative ranging devices, such as a global positioning system (24), in order to improve the accuracy of the estimations provided by the ranging processing. Nevertheless, the method and apparatus of the present invention provide relatively accurate state vectors (34) without the need for precisely accurate timing synchronization at each of the stations connected by communication links.

  1. 1
A communication system for traffic control or monitoring of vehicles (12), comprising:at least one traffic control station (16) on a terrestrial surface;a plurality of satellites (14, 24) having a communication link system communicating through a first link (R1, R2, R3) with said control station (16);a vehicle (12) having a communication transceiver (44) for sending and receiving signals to said satellites (14) and from said satellites (14) through a second link (R4, R5, R6), said first (R1, R2, R3) and second (R4, R5, R6) links defining a path for carrying a transmission including a unique coded signal portion for each vehicle (12) and a message signal portion,    characterized in that each said path is a two-way communication network between one of said plurality of satellites (14, 24) and each of said ground station (16) and said vehicle (12), and wherein said communication network includes ranging determination for each vehicle (12) with respect to at least two said paths including a transmission with a unique coded signal portion.
  2. 5
The system of claim claim 3, charaterized in that said CDMA signal link is modulated by a WFIR waveform design.
  3. 6
A method for determining position of a vehicle (12) utilizing two-way ranging techniques in a satellite communication system (10) having a plurality of satellites (14, 24), comprising the steps of:transmitting a first signal to a vehicle (12) from a traffic control station (16) through a first of the plurality of satellites (14), said vehicle (12) acquiring and tracking a unique ranging code;transmitting from said vehicle (12) a message signal including said unique code representing said vehicle (12) to said ground station (16) through said first of the plurality of satellites (14);repeating each said transmitting step through a second of the plurality of satellites (14);andprocessing ranging measurements to derive estimations (34) of vehicle state vectors in response to said first signal and said message signal from each said transmitting step at said traffic controller station (16).
  4. 9
The method of any of claims 6 - 8, charaterized in that said processing comprises inputting said first signal and said message signal to an α-β/extended Kalman filter (26).
  5. 10
The method of any of claims 6 - 9, charaterized in that said traffic controller station (16) is a ground based station (16).
