10 claims: 3 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
A method of locating a noise floor for qualifying a signal, comprising steps characterized by :establishing a noise power density function based on: a relationship between an average peak level (703) of the signal and a current level of the signal, and a plurality of standard deviation values (702) of the signal, each of the standard deviation values corresponding to one of a plurality of time intervals;repeatedly updating (705) the noise power density function to produce a current state of noise power density function;and using the current state of the noise power density function to locate (707) the noise floor.
  2. 5
An apparatus (410) for determining whether voice is present in an audio signal, comprising a voice activity detector (410), the voice activity detector (410) characterized by :a peak calculator (703) to determine a peak of the audio signal;a standard deviation generator (702) to determine a plurality of standard deviation values of the audio signal, each of the standard deviation values corresponding to one of a plurality of time intervals;updating logic (705) coupled to receive the peak and the standard deviation values, the updating logic (705) to update a power density function to establish a current state of the power density function according to a relationship between the peak and a current level of the audio signal and based on the standard deviation values;a noise floor locator (707) coupled to receive the current state of the power density function, the noise floor locator (707) to locate a noise floor based on the current state of the power density function;and decision logic (502) coupled to receive the noise floor and the audio signal, the decision logic (502) to determine that voice is represented in the audio signal when a predetermined relationship exists between the current level of the audio signal and the noise floor.
  3. 9
A computer system (1) having capability for duplex audio communication with a remote site, the system (1) comprising a processor (10) to control the computer system (1) an input device (53) coupled to the processor (10) and coupled to input audio information to be transmitted to the remote site, an output device (52) coupled to the processor (10) and coupled to output audio information received from the remote site, and a voice activity detector (410) coupled to the input device (53) and the output device (52), the voice activity detector (410) to detect voice represented in an audio signal received by the computer system (1) or to be transmitted by the computer system (1), the voice activity detector (410) characterized by :peak logic (703) to determine an average peak of the audio signal;a standard deviation generator (702) to determine a plurality of standard deviation values of the audio signal, each of the standard deviation values corresponding to one of a plurality of time intervals;updating logic (705) coupled to receive the standard deviation values and the average peak, the updating logic (705) to update a power density function to establish a current state of the power density function according to a relationship between the average peak and a current level of the audio signal and based on the standard deviation values;noise logic (707) to locate a noise floor based on the current state of the power density function;and decision logic (502) to determine that voice is represented in the audio signal when a predetermined relationship exists between the current level of the audio signal and the noise floor.
