  1. 1
A method of controlling the transmission of a plurality of frequency channels (T1 to T4), each of which has a frame format of substantially the same constant frame period (FL), the method comprising controlling the timing of transmission of the frames (TF) of each of said frequency channels (T1 to T4) such that the start of the transmission burst (MB) of one of said channels is delayed relative to the start of the transmission burst (MB) of another one of said channels, the method being characterised in that each frame (TF) comprises a transmission burst of variable duration and an interval of variable duration between bursts.
  2. 3
A method of controlling the transmission of a plurality of frequency channels (T to T4), each of which has a frame format of substantially the same constant frame period (FL), comprising controlling the timing of transmission of said frequency channels such that the start timing of the frames of each of said channels differs from that of the other ones of said channels, the method being characterised by controlling the transmission of a control channel (BB) including a plurality of sets of channel control data (AT) each relating to a corresponding one of said plurality of channels (T1 to T4) such that said sets are transmitted sequentially and the order of starting of said frames (TF) of said frequency channels (T1 to T4) substantially corresponds to the order of transmission of said sets of said channel control data (AT).
  3. 4
A method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said plurality of frequency channels (T1 to T4) are each message traffic channels carrying one or more messages (MB) for selective message receivers (14).
  4. 5
A method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said plurality of frequency channels are transmitted by a common transmitter (12).
  5. 6
A method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein said steps of controlling transmission of said channels (T1, T2) comprises transmitting signals to a relay station (12) such that the relay station (12) transmits said channels (T1, T2) with said corresponding timing relationships.
  6. 7
A method as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein said steps of controlling transmission of said channels (T1, T2) include transmitting said channels.
  7. 8
Apparatus for controlling the transmission of a plurality of frequency channels (T1 to T4), each of which has a frame format of substantially the same constant frame period (FL), the apparatus comprising means (26) for controlling the timing of transmission of the frames (TF) of each of said frequency channels (T1 to T4) such that the start of the transmission burst (MB) of one of said channels is delayed relative to the start of the transmission burst (MB) of another one of said channels;characterised in that each frame (TF) comprises a transmission burst (MB) of variable duration and an interval between bursts of variable duration.
  8. 10
Apparatus for controlling the transmission of a plurality of frequency channels (T1 to T4), each of which has a frame format of substantially the same constant frame period (FL), comprising means (26) for controlling the timing of transmission of said frequency channels such that the start timing of the frames of each of said channels differs from that of the other ones of said channels, the apparatus being characterised by means (26) for controlling the transmission of a control channel (BB) including a plurality of sets of channel control data (AT) each relating to a corresponding one of said plurality of frequency channels (T1 to T4) such that said sets are transmitted sequentially and the order of starting of said frames (TF) of said frequency channels (T1 to T4) substantially corresponds to the order of transmission of said sets of said channel control data (AT).
  9. 11
Apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 10, wherein said plurality of frequency channels are each message traffic channels (T1 to T4) carrying one or more messages (MB) for selective message receivers (14).
  10. 12
Apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 11, wherein the means (26) for controlling is arranged to control a common transmitter (12) for transmitting said plurality of frequency channels (T1 to T4).
  11. 13
Apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 12, wherein said means (26) for controlling transmission of said channels includes means for transmitting signals (8) to a relay station (12) such that the relay station transmits said channels (T1 to T4) with said corresponding timing relationships.
  12. 14
Apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 12, including means (8) for transmitting said channels (T1 to T4).
  13. 15
A satellite earth station (8) including apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 13.
  14. 16
A terrestrial base station including apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 8 to 12 and 14.
