  1. 1
A fluid spray nozzle (2) comprising:a housing (14) having a bore (16) open at one end to the ambient atmosphere;coupling means (6, 56, 58) secured to the housing for coupling a source of pressurized fluid to the bore;valve means (24, 36) in the bore adjacent to the one end having closed and open states for selectively opening and closing the one bore end for releasing pressurized fluid received in the bore to the ambient atmosphere through the bore end;a trigger (8, 60, 62) including a pawl (69) and coupled to the valve means and housing and having a valve closed position and a range of valve open positions for placing the valve means in a selected open state in accordance with a given trigger position;valve biasing means (54) are included for resiliently biasing the valve means and trigger in a normally valve closed state;and trigger hold means (12, 94, 96, 100, 102, 106) secured to the housing for releasably holding the trigger in any one of a plurality of selected different discrete valve open states;characterized in that : said trigger hold means includes trigger engagement means comprising a toothed ratchet member (96) including a plurality of ratchet teeth (102) having relatively sharp edges (132) for selectively engaging and disengaging the pawl (69) with at least one tooth, said ratchet member being movably coupled to the housing for said holding of the trigger in said any one of said plurality of open states, said engagement means including resilient means (106) for normally biasing the ratchet member disengaged from said pawl, said valve biasing means being arranged for providing a resilient bias sufficiently great on the pawl for causing the at least one tooth edge to dig into a surface (130) of the pawl in a manner to counteract the bias of the resilient means on the ratchet member to maintain engagement of the ratchet member and pawl in the valve open state.
  2. 2
The nozzle of claim I characterized in that the housing bore (16) extends along a longitudinal axis (18), the valve means comprising:a valve seat (34) secured in the bore, a movable valve member (40) for engaging the seat, and a valve stem (38) connected to the valve member for axially displacing the valve member into and out of engagement with the seat along said axis, and wherein the trigger comprises a trigger member (60) pivotally secured to the housing and coupled to the stem for displacing the stem in response to pivoting of the trigger relative to the housing, the trigger member having an edge (69) forming said pawl, the ratchet member (96) being pivoted to the housing (14) for selective engagement of the at least one tooth (102) with the pawl in a valve open state.
