  1. 1
A method of operating a computer system which stores resources to be accessed by users, comprising the steps of:a) providing resource key codes specifying characteristics required in users to gain access to the resources, each resource having a single key code at a given time, which resource key codes do not uniquely identify respective resources;b) providing user key codes specifying characteristics of users and other information, each user having a single key code at a given time, which user key codes do not uniquely identify respective users, characterized by the user key codes provided being equal in length to the resource key codes and containing fields corresponding to those within the resource key codes;c) when a user requests access to a target resource, comparing the key code of that user with the resource key code of the target resource and granting access to the target resource if the user key code contains the specified characteristics, in that in comparing the key codes, different fields of the key codes may be assigned different levels of importance but each field is taken into account.
  2. 7
A computer (36) which stores resources (6) to be accessed by users (12,15,18),    comprising:a) resource key codes (KC30) associated with respective resources specifying characteristics required in users to gain access to the resources, each resource having a single key code at a given time, which resource key codes do not uniquely identify respective resources;b) means for ascertaining user key codes (KC33) assigned to respective users, the user key codes specifying characteristics of users and other information and each user having a single key code at a given time, which user key codes do not uniquely identify respective users, characterized by the user key codes provided being equal in length to the resource key codes and containing fields corresponding to those within the resource key codes;c) security process means for granting a user access to a specified resource if the user key code contains the characteristics specified in the resource key code associated with that resource, different fields of the key codes may be assigned different levels of importance but each field is taken into account by the security processing means.
