  1. 1
A satellite-based mobile cellular telecommunications system comprising:- a plurality of earth stations (11, 20, 21), each having a visitor location register (13, 19, 22);- a terminal (1) capable of being registered simultaneously with each of the visitor location registers (13, 19, 22);and - a multiple registration location register (45), said multiple registration location register (45) storing information on each registration by said terminal (1) with a visitor location register (13, 19, 22), said multiple registration location register (45) being configured to cause calls intended for said terminal (1) to be routed to said terminal (1) via any one earth station (11, 20, 21) for which registration information is stored in said multiple registration location register (45) in relation to said terminal (1), wherein said multiple registration location register (45) is configured to select one of said earth stations (11, 20, 21) registered in relation to said terminal (1) in response to a call intended for said terminal (1) dependant on satellite coverage conditions of the registered earth stations and cause the call to be routed to said terminal (1) via the selected earth station.
  2. 4
The telecommunications system of one of claims 1 to 3 further comprising:- multiple mobile-services switching centers (11, 21), each having an associated visitor location register (13, 19);a plurality of antennas providing radio coverage, said plurality being divided into sub-sets of antennas forming location areas (4,9), each location area having a unique location area identification (LAI), said location areas (4, 9) being divided into sub-sets (6) of location areas, each location area sub-set (6) being supported by a different mobile-services switching center (11, 21) and its associated visitor location register (13, 19);wherein said terminal (1) is within the coverage area of one of the location areas (4, 9) of the cellular telecommunications system;said terminal (1) monitoring location area identification information and supporting visitor location register identification information being broadcast within the location area, said terminal (1) storing the location area identification of the location area in which coverage is being provided and the identity of the visitor location register (13, 19) of the mobile-services switching center (11, 21) supporting said location area, said terminal (1) registering with the visitor location register of the mobile-services switching center (11, 21) supporting that location area, said terminal (1) receiving from said visitor location register (13, 19) a unique terminal identification, and said terminal (1) storing said terminal identification in association with said location area identification and said visitor location register identification;said terminal (1) continuing to monitor location area identification information and supporting visitor location register identification information being broadcast within the location area, and said terminal (1) identifying that said location identification information and supporting visitor location register identification information has changed due to terminal movement into the coverage area of a new mobile-services switching center (11, 21) and its associated visitor location register;said terminal (1) identifying the location area identification of the new location area in which coverage is being provided, said terminal (1) registering with the supporting visitor location register of the mobile-services switching center (11, 21) supporting said new location area, and said visitor location register (13, 19) assigning a new unique terminal identification to said terminal (1);said terminal (1) storing the new terminal identification along with the said location area identification and the identification of the new visitor location register (13, 19) supporting said location area, said terminal (1) maintaining storage of the previously assigned terminal identification and its associated location area identification and supporting visitor location registration identification;said terminal (1) monitoring location area identification information and supporting visitor location register identification information being broadcast within the location area, said terminal (1) able to determine which of the multiple location area identifications and associated visitor location register identifications said terminal (1) has stored is identical to the location area identification and visitor location register identification being broadcast, said terminal (1) selecting the unique terminal identification associated with the location area identification and visitor location register identification being broadcast, said terminal (1) recognizing said location area identification and visitor location register identification have changed from the last previous identifications monitored by the terminal (1), said terminal (1) using said selected unique terminal identification and validating its registration with said selected visitor location register, said terminal (1) using said unique terminal identification for communication with said cellular telecommunications system during the period it remains within the coverage of said location area;or, said terminal (1) using said selected unique terminal identification and attempting to validate its registration with said selected visitor location register, said selected visitor location register rejecting said terminal's validation, said terminal (1) erasing said selected unique terminal identification and its associated location area identification and visitor location register identification information from storage, said terminal (1) then newly registering with said visitor location register.
  3. 5
A method of routing calls in a satellite-based mobile cellular telecommunications system, said method comprising the steps of:- registering by a terminal (1) with a visitor location register (13, 19, 22) of each of a plurality of earth stations (11, 20, 21);- storing in a multiple registration location register (45) information on each registration by said terminal (1) with a visitor location register (13, 19, 22), said multiple registration location register (45) being configured to cause calls intended for said terminal (1) to be routed to said terminal (1) via any one earth station (11, 20, 21) for which registration information is stored in said multiple registration location register (45) in relation to said terminal (1);and - in response to a call intended for said terminal (1), selecting by said multiple registration location register (45) one of said earth stations (11, 20, 21) regis tered in relation to said terminal (1) dependant on satellite coverage conditions of the registered earth stations and providing by said multiple registration location register (45) routing information so that the call is routed to said terminal (1) via the selected earth station.
