  1. 1
Apparatus for weighting a transmit path between a first communication device (102) and a second communication device (101) in which the first communication device (102) includes:a transmitter (122), a receiver (124), a plurality of antennas (106, 110, 112), weight circuits (131, 133, 135, 150, 152, 154) connected between each of the antennas (106, 110, 112) and the transmitter (122) and a controller (126) coupled to the weight circuits wherein the controller controls the transmitter to transmit a reference signal through at least one of the antennas and controls at least one of the weight circuits to adjust a weight associated with the at least one of the antennas according to weight information received from the second communication device, (101) and in which the second communication device (101) includes a receiver (118) for receiving said reference signal and a transmitter (116) for transmitting weight information to the first communication device (102), and characterised in that first and second communication devices (101) (102) further includes, each respectively, first (160) and second (120) memories storing predetermined weights having an associated index, and in that the second communication device (101) further includes;circuitry (120) for calculating at least one weight for the transmit path from the referenced signal received from each antenna (106, 110, 112) and means (120) for selecting an index from the second memory depending upon the calculated weight and wherein the transmitted weight information comprises the selected index.
  2. 2
Apparatus according to Claim 1 in which the second memory (120) further includes error protection coding for transmitting to the first communication device (102).
  3. 3
Apparatus according to either preceding Claim in which the second memory (120) is adapted to store weights associated with a previous index selection and in which the calculating circuitry (120) is adapted to use the stored pre-determined weights and said weights associated with a previous index selection to calculate at least one weight.
  4. 4
Apparatus according to either of Claims 1 or 2 in which the calculating circuitry (120) is adapted to calculate at least one weight for limiting peak power in the transmit path.
