  1. 1
An articulating surgical instrument (30) comprising an articulation transmission assembly (41) for remotely articulating an end effector (37) on a shaft (40) of said instrument so that the end effector is pivoted relative to the long axis of the shaft, said assembly (41) including:a) a body (50) mounted on said instrument (30), said body (50) having a housing (62) extending therefrom;b) an oscillating member (49) seated rotationally stationary within said housing (62) for oscillating movement therein, said oscillating member (49) having a first set of unloading teeth (51) thereon and a first set of locking teeth (52) thereon;c) a rotating member (48) fitted into said oscillating member (49) for rotational movement therein, said rotating member (48) having a drive shaft thereon extending into said body (50) of said articulation transmission assembly (41) for translating rotational movement of said rotating member (48) into axial movement of flexible bands (45,46) of elongated transmission rods attached to said drive shaft, said rotating member (48) having a second set of locking teeth (54) thereon;and d) an actuator (47) rotatably mounted on said housing (62) of said body (50) and secured to said rotating member (48) for applying a rotational force on said rotating member (48), said actuator (47) having a second set of unloading teeth (70) thereon, wherein: when said articulation transmission assembly (41), is in a locked position, said first and second set of locking and unloading teeth (51,70) are biased towards each other and matingly coupled so as to prevent rotation of said rotating member (48);and when said actuator (47) is rotated from said locked position to an unlocked position, said actuator (47) counterbiases said first set of unloading teeth (51) on said oscillating member (49), and said first and second set of locking teeth (52,54) decouple so as to enable rotational movement of said rotating member (48).
  2. 2
The instrument (30) of Claim 1 wherein each of said teeth from said first and second sets of unloading and locking teeth (51,70,52,54) has a point (76) and a pair of sides (77) diverging from said point (76), and each of said teeth has a tooth angle (A1,A2) defined by a centerline bisecting said tooth from an adjacent tooth and an angled line parallel to one of said pair of sides (77), wherein said tooth angles (A2) for each of said first and second sets of unloading teeth (51,70) is greater than said tooth angle (A1) for each of said first and second sets of locking teeth (52,54).
  3. 3
The instrument (30) of Claim 2 wherein when said articulation transmission assembly (41) is in said locked position, a lower spring (74) seated in said housing of said body (50) and an upper spring (80) positioned within said rotating member (48) bias said first and second set of locking and unloading teeth (51,70;52,54) towards each other.
  4. 4
The instrument (30) of Claim 3 wherein each of said first and second sets of locking and unloading teeth (51,70;52,54) is displayed as a ring of said teeth.
  5. 5
The instrument (30) of Claim 4 wherein said first and second sets of locking teeth (52,54) are concentrically displayed between said first and second sets of unloading teeth (51,70).
  6. 6
The instrument (30) of Claim 5 wherein said actuator (47) has a cap (68) rotatably mounted on said housing (62), and a lever extending from said cap (68) for gripping said actuator (47) so as to apply a rotational force thereon.
  7. 7
The instrument (30) of Claim 6 wherein said cap (68) contains said second set of unloading (70) teeth thereon.
  8. 8
The instrument (30) of Claim 2 wherein said first and second sets of unloading teeth (51,70) have a first coefficient of friction, said first and second sets of locking teeth (52,54) have a second coefficient of friction, and said first coefficient of friction is less than said second coefficient of friction.
